1. Explain to students that creating a government was the first step to becoming an independent nation from Great Britain. The members of the Continental Congress now had to accomplish the daunting task of creating a document that would outline the purpose, structure, and function of the government. In response to this need, the Continental Congress drafted and approved the Articles of Confederation. 2. Read the article individually or as a whole class. 3. Then, show students the video “Articles of Confederation Intro.” 4. Project the image “The Articles of Confederation, 1778,” found in related media. 5. Give each student a copy of the Primary Source Analysis graphic organizer and the Transcript of the Articles of Confederation graphic organizer. 6. Have students work in pairs or small groups to read the Transcript of the Articles of Confederation. Students may write on their copy of the transcript and take notes to clarify their understanding of the text. 7. Then, students should complete the primary source analysis on the Articles of Confederation. 8. Review students’ responses and clarify any questions that students have about the text. 9. As a class, discuss: a. What was the purpose of the Articles of Confederation? (Answers will vary.) b. Why was it necessary for the Continental Congress to create this document? (Answers will vary.)
