Article 5: Reaction to the Declaration Word Count: 339 Vocabulary: N/A High Impact Teaching Strategies: Collaborative Learning, Metacognitive Strategies, Questioning Lesson Plan: 1. Discuss the Declaration of Independence and how the people in the colonies felt about it. Ask students: a. How did people in England respond? (The Declaration of Independence was printed in a newspaper in England with no introduction or comment.) b. How did the king respond? (He hired John Lind, a lawyer and political writer, to write a response to the Declaration.) c. How did Parliament respond? (Parliament didn’t take the Declaration seriously and denied any wrongdoing on Parliament’s part.) 2. Invite students to predict how they think people in Great Britain felt about America declaring independence by asking students to choose one of the perspectives that was mentioned (people, king, Parliament) and write a short paragraph from their perspective. 3. Read the article while students highlight which group each paragraph is referring to. Have them highlight all the action verbs to see if they can identify their reaction just from the verbs. a.
