Shows students the “Map of Modern States Within the Northwest Territory,” from related media. Explain that this territory included the states of modern-day Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. 4. Have students read the article individually, with a partner, or in small groups. 5. Then, show students the video “The Northwest Territory,” from related media. 6. Explain to students that one of the primary purposes of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was to create a process for territories to become states. Give each student a copy of the graphic organizer Steps to Statehood. 7. Have students complete the graphic organizer individually, with a partner, or in small groups. 8. Once students have finished their graphic organizer, create a class anchor chart, outlining the steps that a territory must take in order to become a state. Article Assessment Questions: 1.
