4. Help students recognize that the census is a valuable primary document for historical research. 5. Read the article, then ask students: a. Why does the government count the population? (The House of Representatives is based on population.) b. What kind of information did the 1790 census gather? i. Name of the head of the family ii. Number of free, white males 16 years old or older iii. Number of free, white males younger than 16 years old iv. Number of free, white females v. Number of all other free persons vi. Number of enslaved persons c. How do you think it has changed? (Answers will vary.) 6. Distribute copies of the graphic organizers 1980 Census Questions and 2000 Census Questions. Have students compare and contrast the two censuses and talk about some of the questions on each version. 7. Have students come up with a list of questions they would include on their own census.
