Lesson Plan: 1. Show students the map of ”Louisiana Territory,” from related media. 2. Ask students:

a. What was the impact of the Louisiana Purchase on the United States? (Answers will vary.) b. What did people know about the territory? (Answers will vary.)

3. Watch the video “Lewis and Clark Intro,” from related media. 4. Have students read the article “The Corps of Discovery.”

5. Revisit the primary source excerpts from Lewis and Clark. Explain to students that these excerpts are from the detailed journals that the leaders of the Corps of Discovery kept throughout the journey. For each primary source excerpt, have students work individually or with a partner to answer the following analysis questions in their interactive notebooks: a. Write this excerpt in your own words. (Answers will vary.) b. What is the purpose of this entry? (Answers will vary.) c. How does it help you understand the events that took place? (Answers will vary.) 6. Once students have read the article, give each student a copy of the graphic organizer Corps of Discovery Letter. 7. For this activity, students will write a letter from the perspective of one of the members of the Corps of Discovery, using the information from the video and the text. They should include: a. a recipient of the letter (family member, friend, etc.) b. description of their experiences
