DECEMBER 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA As we enter the most festive season of the year, there is a special warmth in gathering with family and friends to celebrate cherished traditions. Whether you enjoy the twinkling lights of a neighborhood stroll, share meals with loved ones, or curl up by the fire with a favorite holiday classic, December invites us to slow down and embrace moments of tradition and joy. At Twin Cities PBS, we’re reflecting on a truly prolific 2024 and looking forward to exciting opportunities in the New Year. One of the highlights we are especially proud of this season is the 40th anniversary of “Almanac,” Minnesota’s longest-running public affairs program, which premiered on December 7, 1984. For four decades, “Almanac” has been a trusted resource every Friday evening at 7 pm, providing Minnesotans with well-rounded perspectives on local, regional and national events—with a touch of humor along the way. This remarkable milestone not only honors the series’ legacy, but also celebrates our commitment to meaningful, enduring journalism. December also brings our annual year-end pledge drive, an annual tradition that allows us to continue delivering quality content to our viewers. We are grateful for each of you, and this drive is a wonderful opportunity to deepen your support while enjoying some exceptional programming. This year, our lineup is filled with fan-favorites and fascinating features: Delve into the charming world of “All Creatures Great & Small” from the animals’ perspective; gain new insights into our shared heritage with historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; and celebrate a true music legend with a tribute to Willie Nelson on his 90th birthday. On December 17 at 7 pm, we are also thrilled to premiere a new Twin Cities PBS Originals film, “Remember the Magic: A Look Back at the Dayton’s Holiday Shows.” This nostalgic journey revisits the decades when the 8th floor auditorium of the Dayton’s department store transformed into an enchanting holiday wonderland, captivating visitors from across Minnesota and beyond. As you leaf through this month’s magazine, you will find the full schedule for these special programs and so many more. Thank you for being part of the TPT family and for your unwavering support. Here’s to a joyful December and a bright new year!

Get to Know “Almanac” Supervising Producer Kari Kennedy As the Show Celebrates 40 Years

Whether you watch “Almanac’s” debut from December 7, 1984 or the latest weekly episode, several strands of the show’s DNA remain the same, namely the distinct blend of political analysis, thoughtful commentary and context on the issues Minnesotans care most about, and the “variety show” elements such as humor and music. But if you ask the show’s Supervising Producer Kari Kennedy, who has been a dedicated member of the “Almanac” team for 30 years, the show has also evolved in ways that reflect Minnesota’s changing demographics and sensibilities. As the longest-running public affairs show in Minnesota history, “Almanac” will celebrate its 40th anniversary as 2024 draws to a close, and the weekly show remains a trusted source of news and information in an increasingly polarized media and political landscape. That commitment to balanced reporting that forms the core of “Almanac” has always been a draw to Kennedy, who knew at a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in journalism, even giving up summer days to watch the Watergate hearings on television while her friends played outside. On the eve of “Almanac’s” 40-year milestone, we asked Kennedy to reflect on the show’s enduring legacy, as well as on the future ahead. The show is known for its blend of balanced reporting and Midwest charm. How do you think this unique approach has shaped “Almanac's” place in Minnesota’s public affairs landscape? Kennedy : I think it is that mix of thoughtful, smart, trusted conversation with multiple perspectives and some lighter fun things mixed in. How many people host major political debates in one week and, in another, have a visit from Tabitha the Kemps Cow when her retirement was announced. It helps a great deal to have hosts and reporters that are

Minnesotans – they understand the communities we serve because they live here and grew up here. They have a connection to our viewers and communities. Just based on that, and I think it helps them tell stories, either in the studio when Eric and Cathy are talking live with people, or hearing Mary and Kaomi out in the field as they make that connection with sources that they're talking to because they kind of have that same base, that same Midwestern knowledge of life. Over the years, “Almanac” has addressed critical issues affecting Minnesotans while staying true to nonpartisan and fact-based journalism. In a time of increased polarization, what do you think it is about the show that continues to resonate with such a broad audience? Kennedy : It’s a continuation of that goal to provide as many different perspectives as possible so viewers can make informed decisions on their own, and to do so in a manner that is respectful of all perspectives and guests we have on the program. As that polarization has increased, “Almanac” provides a safe haven of sorts for our guests and for our viewers. It’s a place where respectful discourse still happens. We have a lot of elected officials and political analysts and other people on our show who disagree deeply about stuff, but who appreciate the ability to connect with somebody who disagrees with them in a respectful manner. We've had people who are complete polar opposites politically become friends because they've gotten to know each other through the show. Governor Tim Walz recently highlighted “Almanac” as a space for civil discourse. Can you share some of the principles that guide your team in fostering thoughtful, respectful conversations?

6

DECEMBER 2024

Kennedy : You know it’s part of that goal that, as we're researching stories and looking at what we want to do on the show, we ask, “How many different opinions are there?” There are more than two to most stories. How many different spaces are people caring about this issue, talking about this issue? And then we figure out who we think is the best, most respectful person to provide that conversation for us, live on TV. Then we hand the live conversation over to our longtime hosts and trusted journalists, Eric Eskola and Cathy Wurzer, who are experts at getting people to share their perspectives with each other and the audience. “Almanac” has had some memorable interviews and segments over the years. Are there any that stand out to you personally or that you feel captured the spirit of the show? Kennedy : Oh, there are so many to choose from. How about a few favorite guests or topics over the years? Honestly, one of my all-time favorite guests on the show is Kate DiCamillo. She's a children's author. She has been a delightful regular guest on our show for more than half of its run. There was this author who happened to live in Minnesota, who won a Newberry Award more than 20 years ago, and we invited her on and she was the most delightful guest. I'm also really proud of all the debates we've done over the years. We have hosted more live debates than anybody else in broadcast in our state – and I'm proud of those because they're hard to pull off. It's hard to get candidates to say yes increasingly, but it's also just hard to figure out that dance of doing it. A memorable debate moment that many people think of when they think of “Almanac” debates happened decades ago, when Rudy Boschwitz and Paul Wellstone were running against each other, and they literally ended up pointing at each other over Eric. That was a feisty moment, but an interesting one, too. How has the audience responded to “Almanac's” commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives? Do you think this approach has impacted public dialogue in Minnesota?

positive, like they tell us “I learned something about either my own community that I didn't know about, or community in a different part of the state and it helped me understand something that isn't my life experience.” Overall, I think it's been really great. It's been wonderful to be able to do more reporting from Greater Minnesota in the last 6 to 7 years with the addition of Kaomi Lee to our staff and that has also been a nice way to connect our viewers around each corner of the state. Mary Lahammer has also had the ability to increase her political reporting over time. She's been with us for more than 25 years of the show, and early on, it wasn't as possible to do that. The other thing that's really nice for us is, you know, politics really still is our bread and butter, and increasingly our state legislature reflects the diversity in our state more than it ever has. And that has given us a world of possibilities because part of what we do is to reflect on who is making decisions that affect everybody's lives. As you celebrate this milestone, what are your hopes for the future of “Almanac,” and how do you envision the show continuing to serve Minnesota in the years ahead? In some ways, the answer is almost too simple: I want us just to keep doing what we're doing, but part of that is because we've worked so hard at evolving. I think if you look at a show from the first season and a show from last week, there are a lot of similarities, but we've also evolved as our state has evolved and as technology has evolved as our staff has evolved. But one of the things that I always hope we can do more of is provide more stories from around the state to all of our viewers. So that's one of the things I hope to do. I hope we can continue to elevate stories. It's my hope that we can continue to reflect a changing, growing, thoughtful community that we serve, and remain a trusted source of information for them. That’s why we work so hard at providing as much balanced and unbiased information as we can, because our viewers trust us and they keep coming back because of it.

Kennedy : We do a yearly survey and ask our viewers about that and, increasingly, the answers are really

Sweet Memories of Holidays Past By Michele Wojciechowski

I have wonderful memories of Christmases. Some came from when my husband and I celebrated our first one as a married couple in our first home. But, for me, many come from childhood. I remember when I was in kindergarten, I had one of the most exciting Christmas days. One of the gifts I had asked Santa for was a blackboard. Back then, we loved playing "school." Although my friends and I didn't know that in a few years, we would be longing for summer to arrive as quickly as possible. When I came running down the steps to the living room to see if Santa had come, I was thrilled to see he had! He had eaten the cookies I'd left for him, and the carrot was gone that I left for the reindeer. There, in the middle of the room, was the most fantastic gift of all: my blackboard. It was one with a green background and affixed to an easel.

The best part? Santa had written a note to me in chalk. I don't remember what it said exactly, but I know it said something about my having been good that year and it was signed "Santa."

"The best part? Santa had written a note to me in chalk."

My mom had to convince me that he would think it was okay to erase it so that I could play with it.

At that age, I didn't realize the printing somehow looked exactly like my mom's handwriting.

A Holiday Memory

"I had three grandchildren who were all the same age. When they had barely turned three, we had everyone to our house and asked a friend to come by dressed as Santa to put the gifts out. Grandpa kept them upstairs, reading to them, until I snuck up and whispered loudly that 'Santa is here, but don't tell the kids!' They had to sneak down the stairs and watch. Santa came over and talked to three little kids who didn't really know what to believe. I have this precious memory all on DVD." — Bonnie Moore, Utah

Smart Strategies to Escape Credit Card Debt By Lucy Lazarony

Admit it, you are over 50 with credit card debt.

According to credit card date from Experian, you're not alone. GenXers and baby boomers have several thousand dollars of credit card debt weighing them down. The average credit card balance for GenXers has grown by close to 50% since 2012 and now exceeds $9,000. Baby boomers are doing a bit better; they now owe slightly less than they did 12 years ago with a $6,648 average balance. The average interest rate on credit-card debt is 22.8% — almost double the average of 12.9% a decade ago and the highest level seen since the Federal Reserve began keeping records on this in 1994. Someone with a $9,000 credit card balance at that average interest rate will pay $170 a month in interest alone. "Baby boomers, who may be nearing or in retirement, benefit greatly from reducing credit card debt as they approach their retirement years," says Rod Griffin, senior director of consumer education and advocacy for Experian. "Lowering debt can reduce financial stress and ensure that a greater portion of their income is available for retirement savings and living expenses, rather than interest payments."

Need more incentive? Those hefty credit card balances are hurting your credit score as well as your wallet. "Credit card debt impacts your credit utilization rate, which can have a significant effect on your credit score," Griffin says. "On the flip side, keeping your credit card balances low reduces your credit utilization rate, which will have a positive impact on credit scores."

Here’s a Tip

Pay more than the minimum . You'll clear out debt faster when you pay more than the minimum payment due on your credit card balance. "The goal is to find room to increase your monthly payments, so you are paying more than the minimum,” says debt expert Bruce McClary. “The more you pay above the monthly minimum, the faster you are out of debt and the more you save on interest over time."

"Lowering debt can reduce financial stress and ensure that a greater portion of their income is available for retirement savings and living expenses, rather than interest payments."
