“With MSM, the minimum investment is small enough but has a large impact on household savings – and it gives people something to fall back on,” he notes. The fund is benchmarked against the FTSE/JSE All Property Index and invests in household names such as Growthpoint, Nepi Rockcastle and Redefine. “Crucially, the portfolio that we have for individuals is the same as we have for institutions – because money is money, we don’t differentiate,” says Musi. “By democratising it, we are giving individuals the same investment access and growth as institutions.” Technology as a gateway Delivering that democratisation requires more than a product – it demands an accessible distribution model. MSM’s answer is its mobile app, available via Apple iStore and Google Play, which allows investors to sign up, contribute, track portfolios and withdraw funds entirely digitally. The solution has dramatically reduced the time and friction usually involved in participating in financial investments. “People don’t want to sit in meetings and fill in forms – the mobile phone is ideal as a distribution model,” says Musi. “It makes it easy for clients to find and reach us, and we’ve seen good growth in the business using this method.”
