The app has already produced compelling success stories. One security guard at MSM’s former offices began contributing R300 per month. At the end of the year, he withdrew a portion to cover January expenses – traditionally a difficult month for many South Africans – without interrupting his debit order contributions. “For the first time ever, ‘Januworry’ hadn’t been a huge problem for him,” Musi recalls. “He bought school uniforms and groceries for his family. It changed his life – and that’s exactly what we are aiming to do.” To support this digital platform, MSM also places a strong emphasis on financial literacy. The firm produces newsletters, market notes and educational content, including TikTok videos , to help investors understand the economic environment. “There’s still a big problem with financial literacy in South Africa,” says Musi. “We want people to feel they have some semblance of control rather than feeling like victims of the economy.” Targeting the 94% MSM’s retail offering is more than a business strategy – it is a social intervention. Vuyani points out that only 6% of South Africans are likely to live comfortably in retirement. The other 94%, he says, represents the group that MSM wants to reach. “That’s the segment we’re targeting and trying to help to be savvy about their savings,” he explains. “It’s about building up something for those retirement years.”
