About Anegada

A variety of wildlife special to the Virgin Islands area thrive on Anegada, including loblolly, frangipani, turpentine trees, feathery sea lavender and wild orchids. On the nature trail at Bones Bight, catch a glimpse of the rare rock iguanas native to the island, or discover the exotic birds at Nutmeg Point. Snorkellers and scuba divers will delight in the reef’s mazes, tunnels and drops, which are rich in needlefish, bonefish, stingrays, parrotfish and other marine life, while those with sea legs will enjoy water sports, sport fishing and bone

fishing. Beachgoers will find no lack of calm and quiet shores, including Loblolly Bay, Pomato Point, Keel Point, Bones Bight, Windlass Bight and Cow Wreck. Discover Anegada’s history through a maze of stone walls that surround the main town’s, Settlement or the ancient Arawak conch shell mounds in the East End. Or explore the wreckages of numerous Spanish galleons, American privateers and British Galleons.

T he only coral island in the Virgin Islands’ volcanic chain, Anegada is characterised by its nearly flat elevation, the striking coral reefs that surround it, secluded sandy beaches and clear springs bubbling from coral beds.

Fisherman’s Wharf This is the original dock used by local fishermen as they traversed back and forth from their fishing expeditions. There is an interpretation centre here that gives visitors a peek into Anegada’s maritime legacy. S. Vanessa Faulkner Botanical Garden This cool and refreshing spot in Anegada was the brainchild of Ms. S.Vanessa Faulkner. The garden has benches set among the colourful indigenous flora of Anegada. Salt Heap Point Lookout Equipped with a mounted telescope, this lookout, constructed in 2016, gives viewers a front row seat to Flamingo Pond where one can view the brightly coloured but shy pink flamingos from a safe distance. Conch Shell Mounds Lookout Completed in 2021, this platform allows for a clear view of the Conch shell mounds, from land! Be sure to check it out! Anegada Sign: Located in the S. Vanessa Faulkner Botanical Garden, this iconic sign painted by talented artist, Ms. Tia Modeste features tidbits of Anegada’s history and way of life. Snap a picture by it!

Anegada Rock Iguana Head Start Facility Anegada is home to a rare and endangered species of iguana, the Anegada Rock Iguanas. The BVI National Parks Trust with the help of donations and international funding maintains the facility to raise juvenile iguana until they grow to a size where they can be successfully released into the wild. Conch Shell Mounds Anegada fishermen have carried on the tradition of piling conch shells up in the water in areas away from where the conch is found, just like the original inhabitants of the island, centuries ago. Some of these mounds rise up to 12 feet out of the water, attracting a variety of marine life including fish, turtles and sting rays. Take a guided tour out to these magnificent spectacles. Faulkner House Museum Opened in 2015, this museum was once the home of the Late Honourable Theodolph H. Faulkner. He was a fisherman and political activist who was one of the leaders in the fight for the restoration of the legislature in the BVI. The house showcases typical furniture of the day along with interesting artifacts and imagery of Anegada and the BVI.
