Focusing on the Fun in Retirement
YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR OWN JOY
Your working years were spent giving all of yourself to others: your family, place of employment, friends, and community. You worked tirelessly to make ends meet and to save up for retirement. Now it’s time to focus on you. It’s time to enjoy the fact that you are no longer punching the clock, and it’s time to find your joy. That joy can be found in hobbies like taking care of pets, participating in social activities, or even traveling. The possibilities are endless, and the beauty of retirement is that you don’t have to have all of the answers right now. You have the rest of your retirement years to figure it all out, and it’s a comfort to know that as your interests and hobbies change, I’m here to help tweak your financial plan to keep up with wherever life takes you. While it may feel out of the ordinary to shift gears and begin to think more about yourself after so many years of putting others first, keep in mind that, as the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” Before you can benefit those with whom you are close, you must focus on your own contentment and filling up your own
“happy cup.” In return, those you love get to experience and share in your happiness, too.
After retirement, it’s a brand new beginning to explore all that makes you happy. Maybe you’d like to remodel your home or even downsize? Possibly you’d like to teach others certain skills you have honed over the years. Have you always wanted to experience a thrill like skydiving? There is still time to discover. Does volunteering help you to feel a sense of accomplishment? Remember that you are only as old as you feel, and age is only a number. You can plan as you go, and I’m here to help! I meet with clients regularly throughout the year to check in and review their financial plans, and there is always room for adjustments. Whether you are newly retired or have been retired for five or 20 years, your first year of retirement is always going to look different than the second year, and so on and so forth. At every meeting, I love to hear about your new adventures and activities that bring excitement and enhancements to your life. At Wolf Retirement Navigation, we are here to assist you with your financial portfolio and help you reach your goals in your journey to retirement as well as your life after retiring. We regularly host a variety of social events to open the doors for new friendships and engagements. Just as you once had a work-life balance, you now have a retirement-life balance, and we are here to help you harvest your happiness in the most relaxing yet energizing way possible. It’s important to step outside of your comfort zone. Pursue your passions — the world is yours!

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD NIGHT’S REST
Quality Sleep Promotes Healthy Aging
Sleep is an essential part of our lives, but it becomes even more important as we get older, as it’s a necessity for healthy aging and staying energized. Ideally, everyone should sleep between 7.5–9 hours a night, but as we get older, this becomes much harder to achieve. Health complaints, minor disturbances, and a decrease in melatonin levels make it difficult for seniors to get a full night of sleep, which can cause irritability and fatigue.
In order to combat these disturbances, here are a few things you can do to ensure you get enough sleep during the night.
BUILD AN ACTIVE DAILY ROUTINE. Outdoor exercise and general movement every day is good for your body, but being outside and absorbing sunlight can balance and optimize your melatonin levels, which can help you fall asleep easier. On top of exercise, try weaving protein-rich snacks and meals into your routine. Foods like light meat and nuts can improve sleep quality, and dairy foods contain tryptophan, which is a sleep-promoting chemical. ELIMINATE UNHEALTHY SUBSTANCES. Limit your intake of caffeine and sugar throughout the day — especially right before bed — for better rest. It’s also best not to drink anything about an hour before bed, so you don’t wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and disrupt your sleep.
REGULATE YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE. Keeping the same schedule for sleeping can reap immediate benefits. You will notice increased alertness during waking hours as well as enhanced memory and attention span. You may also start to feel tired around the same time every day, ensuring that you will actually go to sleep right on schedule. It can take time and patience to adjust to new habits to improve sleep, especially for the elderly. It won’t happen overnight, but the benefits that come with a better night’s sleep will have you feeling younger and healthier than ever before. If anything, you will feel more engaged and happier throughout your daily life.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: MARSHALL KLOB
Under the Tin Roof
Since retirement, one of our clients has taken a newfound hobby and literally “turned” it into much more! Marshall Klob retired about 5–6 years ago and has been busy ever since enjoying his recently discovered hobby while giving back.
Some unique techniques that Marshall has picked up along the way include filling voids and inclusions in the wood. When the wood rots or softens a bit in certain areas, he is able to dig out the softened wood and replace it with either a metalized epoxy or sodium bicarbonate to create some beautiful designs. This past holiday season, Marshall sold beautiful ornaments at the office, and the proceeds went to benefit JaxPAL. Post-holidays, his work, including candlesticks and small bowls, is featured at KMH Home in Neptune Beach, Florida, a lifestyle store and design firm located in the Courtyard Shoppes of Beaches Town Center. Just ask to see the beautiful wood pieces turned by Marshall Klob in the collection ”Under the Tin Roof.” Stop by, check out his work, and purchase a handmade one-of-a-kind item to enjoy for many years or to give as a special gift! We want to know more about you! We are looking forward to featuring our clients’ stories monthly, discussing the many things that enrich their lives and retirement. Please call us at 904-232-8760 to share your story with us so we can share it with others too!
“In high school, I learned how to turn wood on a wood lathe, which they don’t seem to do in schools anymore today,” Marshall tells us. “That was my first introduction to woodturning. It wasn’t until after retirement that I picked it back up, and I’m glad that I did. I really enjoy it.” Once Marshall started experimenting with woodturning again, he developed new skills, and all that he had learned many years ago came back to him slowly but surely. “I mostly enjoy turning little wooden ornaments out of old branches that have been lodged in a tree for a while. After sitting for some
time, they become seasoned and contain spalting as the wood begins to decay,” Marshall says. “I look at the characteristics of each branch and I start turning. I let the wood talk to me.”

5 TIPS FOR EATING AT RESTAURANTS IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES
Enjoying some food abroad? It can be tough to feel like the odd one out, and restaurant etiquette can vary widely across country borders. Here are five things to keep in mind while exploring the cuisine in new places!
EGYPT It’s never acceptable to refill your own beverage while in Egypt. It’s customary to allow someone else to do it. When your neighbor’s glass is half-empty, refill their glass, and they’ll return the favor! ENGLAND Port — a sweet wine that originates from Portugal — is enjoyed in a very specific way in England. It must be continuously passed to the left side of the table until the bottle is finished. If the port is not passed, it’s impolite to ask for it. Instead, someone can ask the person who has it, “Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?” Once they reply they don’t know him, the response goes, “He’s a very good chap, but he always forgets to pass the port.” ITALY In Italy, it’s considered a cardinal sin to ask for cheese when it’s not offered to you. If you want to blend in with the locals, don’t ask for extra cheese on your pasta or — even worse — seafood!
CHINA While eating food in China, don’t stick your chopsticks into your meal straight upward. It brings a curse of bad luck since it reminds those in the Chinese culture of the incense that burns at funerals. It’s also bad luck in many other Asian cultures for similar reasons, including Japan and Korea. When setting down your chopsticks, let them rest on the rims of your rice bowl or on the table.
CHILE With the exception of bread, in Chile, you must use utensils for everything you eat! It’s considered bad manners to eat with your hands. Even french fries and pizza are eaten with a knife and fork.
We hope these tips help you on your next journey abroad! Bon appétit!
