Finding Strength in Appreciation During Challenging Times
BY DR. ALEX DAKESSIAN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, MCCUTCHEON ELEMENTARY
October is Principal Appreciation Month, which offers us a time to pause, reflect, and express gratitude for the amazing leaders who guide our schools with courage and vision. Appreciation is powerful in any season, but it becomes especially meaningful during difficult times. When challenges arise, whether from districtwide shifts, resource and budgetary struggles, or the daily complexities of leading a school, appreciation can allow us a moment to remind us of our purpose and fuels our resilience. As a school Assistant Principal and an Auxiliary Vice President, I see firsthand how much strength and sacrifice school leaders pour into their communities. We all know that leadership is not easy. It requires holding the weight of responsibility while keeping joy, safety, and hope alive for students, families, and staff. True appreciation is not just saying thank you—it is recognizing the unseen labor, the long hours, the tough decisions, and the steadfast belief in what our students deserve. I am proud to honor my principal partner, Kahinde Longmire, during Principal Appreciation Month. Her leadership at McCutcheon STEAM Elementary is rooted in equity, innovation, and unwavering love for our students and community. She leads with vision but also with heart. She never loses sight of each individual child in the midst of systemic change. Her ability to remain steady in storms inspires me daily, and her partnership has made me a better leader. Appreciation, in its truest sense, is about shining light on others when the work feels heavy. This month, I invite us all to recognize and celebrate the principals who lead with courage through difficult times—as we are experiencing right now. Their leadership shapes not only schools, but also the future of every child who walks through our doors.
