RETIREE’S CORNER

You didn’t “leave” the work… you changed your lane. Our union still needs your voice, your playbook, your reality checks. Tonya Tolbert has been gathering how retirees are living now… and we want to add yours to the mix.

Retirement isn’t a finish line… it’s a remix. The tempo shifts, the obligations rearrange, and the calendar still finds a way to fill. Health appointments. Parents. Grandkids. Church. Boards. The house projects you promised you’d tackle… and sometimes a little part-time work because schools are still in your bones. Many of you told Tonya the “busy” didn’t vanish… it changed shape. Freedom is real… so is the habit of saying yes. Without bells and deadlines, structure becomes a choice you make on purpose. Some of you now block time for rest like you once blocked time for lunch duty. Some of you mentor once a month and call it soul work. Some of you budget like hawks because the pension lands on the first… and everything else lands after. What do you miss… really? The walk-throughs. The hum of a building waking up. The engineer’s keys. Recess noise. The quick wins you could see in a child’s face. The team that felt like family. You don’t miss the incident reports… but you miss the pulse.

Tonya Tolbert, Retiree Union Steward, at CPAA SLI After-Party.
