A NOTE FROM SYLVIA June is here and the sights, smells and sounds of summer are in the air: birds chirping away on the Cannon Valley Rail Trail, the smell of brats sizzling away on my husband’s old-fashioned Weber grill, and new vegetable shoots poking up in my backyard garden. I am also thrilled to share with you some fascinating programming highlights that just might rival our wonderful summers. Masterpiece Mystery fans will rejoice with the return of the whodunit series, Grantchester , premiering on June 16 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2. Join us as we delve into the seemingly quiet 1950s Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester, where murder, mystery and mayhem lurk beneath the surface, and a detective-vicar duo is always on the case. Rumor has it that we will also be introduced to a new vicar in this new season. In celebration of Pride Month this June, we invite you to join us for Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution , a captivating three-part series that delves into the story of disco — from its humble beginnings in the basement bars of 1970s New York City to its meteoric rise on the global charts. Through iconic tracks and remarkable footage, this series offers a powerful, revisionist history of the disco age, exploring its impact and legacy in ways you've never seen before. Tune in on Tuesday, June 18 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2 for a journey through the music that defined a generation. And mark your calendars for June 19, when we premiere Hope in the Water , a three-part docuseries from James Beard Award-winning local chef, Andrew Zimmern. Follow along as the series travels the globe to discover innovative solutions and breakthrough blue food technologies that not only nourish us, but also help preserve our threatened seas and fresh waterways. From aquafarmers to fishers, this series showcases the inspiring stories of individuals working toward a sustainable future for our planet. The Legacy of Dr. Josie Johnson Helps Students Understand Social Justice A Conversation with Dr. Catherine Squires, who guided TPT’s efforts to create educational materials for Hope in the Struggle . BY KEVIN YANG
Throughout her life, Dr. Josie Johnson has been a fierce advocate for creating a more just world for learners, and that lasting legacy laces through the TPT original film, Hope in the Struggle . Tracing her experiences as an activist for critical issues such as fair housing, education and civil rights, the film offers an intimate portrait of someone who dedicated her life to service and advocacy. Alongside the production of the documentary and in partnership with TPT’s education team, recently retired Associate Dean of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota Dr. Catherine Squires created education resources that dive deeper into the topics of the film. Alongside co-author and fellow educator, Theresa Collins, Dr. Squires contributed to a variety of resources that are free for educators to use in their classrooms in an effort to help students better understand social justice.
Dr. Squires is the author of multiple books and articles on media, race, gender and politics, including Dispatches from the Color Line D (2007) and The Post-Racial Mystique (2014) and the edited collection Dangerous Discourses: Feminism, Gun Violence & Civic Life (2016). She has engaged in multiple community partnerships in the Twin Cities to uplift and share local Black histories, support BIPOC writers, curate panels, host conferences and facilitate intergenerational story sharing. We had the opportunity to ask Dr. Squires about the curriculum she helped co-create and how she believes teachers can use it in their classrooms. Can you tell us about your relationship with Dr. Josie Johnson and your relationship with the work described in the documentary? I had the privilege of working with students at the University to design an exhibit for the Josie R. Johnson Community Room at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Like the classroom resources for the film, the exhibit features reflective questions and illustrates the many connections between Dr. Johnson and a host of local and national leaders she worked with on civil rights issues. I also had the privilege of meeting with Dr. Johnson and members of the community, including Dr. John Wright, who is featured in the film, to preview the content of the exhibit and to celebrate its opening last year. These interactions reinforced for me how important it is to publicly share the stories of people like Dr. Johnson while they are living so that the records we create are accurate reflections of their own understanding of their legacy and to have contributions from their colleagues, friends, and family to round out the whole picture.

Can you tell us more about the education curriculum for the documentary that you helped co-create? The lesson plans for Hope in the Struggle are designed to provide educators with additional context for students to interact with the film’s intimate portrait of Josie R. Johnson’s life and legacy. Through discussion questions, supplemental readings and review of original historical documents, students will explore the ways Dr. Johnson, her contemporaries, and her predecessors found ways to advance justice and equality, both in Minnesota and across the USA.
What do you hope educators and learners will take from the resources you are sharing?
Dr. Johnson is a true ‘living legend’ whose career brought her into contact with numerous famous individuals, organizations, and events that teachers and students will likely have heard of before they watch the film. The mix of personal stories and testimonies from Dr. Johnson and her granddaughters bring these momentous historical figures and events into a more human-scaled framework, which I believe will help students see their own potential to make contributions to society, to work in community to make positive changes for the future.

Mayan Grilled Pork: Poc Chuc with Recado De Escabeche Recipe by Jorge Guzman, chef of Petite León When chef Jorge Guzman joined Relish host Yia Vang in the kitchen, he explained his passion for food blossomed during summers spent with his father in his native Yucatán, Mexico. "I just fell in love with all the food we would eat there," he says. It's a region with a varied cuisine, with influences from many corners of the globe. "The food from the Yucatán is savory, it's picante, it's spicy…" Guzman says. Try this delicious Mayan Grilled Pork recipe to taste the flavors of the Yucatán from your very own home.
7. Slice pork, garnish with pickled red onions, fresh cilantro. 8. Serve with black beans, salsas (recipes below), rice and/or tortillas as desired.
Chiltomate Sauce
Ingredients 4 medium tomatoes 1 garlic clove 1 habanero pepper 1 medium onion, diced 4 Tbsp lard
Ingredients 2 each 1 lb pork steaks 4 fl oz orange juice 2 fl oz lime juice 2 fl oz grapefruit juice 1 garlic clove roasted, mashed
Directions 1. Roast tomatoes, garlic and pepper over high heat until charred. 2. In a blender, combine roasted tomatoes, garlic and habanero until liquified. 3. Sauté onion in lard, add tomato mixture and cook through.
1/4 tsp allspice 1/4 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp peppercorn 1 bay leaf 1 clove 1 Tbsp salt Mojo de Ajo (optional) Pickled red onions Cilantro
Habanero Salsa
Ingredients 10 habanero peppers 2 fl oz orange juice 2 fl oz lime juice 2 fl oz grapefruit juice 1/4 tsp salt
Directions 1. Toast whole spices then combine and grind to a rough powder. 2. Blend juices and garlic clove. 3. Rub spice mixture and salt into meat, covering all sides. 4. Rub meat with mojo de ajo, if using. 5. Place meat in shallow pan or large bag and pour in citrus mixture. 6. Marinate pork steaks for 30 minutes before grilling.
Directions 1. Roast habaneros over high heat. 2. Remove stems and blend with juices and salt until smooth.

Leif Enger Is 'More Intrigued by Questions and Less Satisfied With Answers' By Danny Klecko
For 20 years, Leif Enger worked as a reporter for Minnesota Public Radio before writing his bestselling debut novel, "Peace Like a River," which was published in 2001. He’s also the author of “So Brave, Young, and Handsome,” and “Virgil Wander.” I had the opportunity to ask Enger, who lives in Duluth, some questions about his current work, “I Cheerfully Refuse.” Danny Klecko : I believe this is the best book you've written. I very much liked its apocalyptic/Orwellian flavor. Leif Enger : I'm a reader first and tend to write the story I'd most want to settle in with for the evening – a tale about people I like, in a place I never want to leave. Those elements are foremost in "Cheerfully," so I hope readers will feel welcomed into the pages. The dystopian society these characters occupy — with its resource scarcity, malignant ruling class and climate upheaval — only extends many developments playing out today. My aim was to see where people find hope, when the very idea of a future is under threat.

As a writer and a sailor, were you chomping at the bit to put a boat in a book?
Your descriptions of Lake Superior surpass beautiful. Was it humbling, trying to capture the spirit of such a holy place? In a way Superior made the story easy to write — if I was struggling to set the mood for a scene, I went down and dipped my hands in the water. It was always cold, sometimes benign, sometimes majestic or brash or violent. Whatever the lake was doing, I put that feeling in the pages.
Spending time on a sailboat you soon notice it responds to wind and water less like a machine than like a living creature. It wants the same things you do — a smooth motion through the waves, a quiet passage across the bay. It also seems to want to take care of you and rewards your practice and patience by keeping you safe in the gusts. It was enormous fun to write this nautical adventure.

LGBTQ+ Caregivers: Challenges, Joys and Realities By Andrea Atkins
By 2030, there will be more than 7 million LGBTQ+ Americans over 65. Like their cisgender counterparts, many will find themselves in the role of caregiver for a loved one. But they may face some challenges that others do not.
Phil was good at doing things around the house. But now it's difficult for him to find the motivation to do it. Most days, he doesn't get out of bed.
"He just knew how to do everything. But it's difficult for him to find the motivation to do it. Most days, he doesn't get out of bed."
Here is one caregiver’s story.
Caring for a Partner Gary Posner, 70: I fell in love with Phil 26 years ago — several years after I lost my first partner to AIDS. Ours was a very stable and monogamous relationship. He gave me so much in those first years. I learned so much, and I enjoyed our relationship immensely. Around 2014, a shooter marched into Phil's workplace and opened fire. One of Phil's closest work friends was killed. That launched him into depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which he has not escaped. He has not worked since.
When I bought our apartment, the agreement was that I'd pay the mortgage, and Phil, now 60, would pay the maintenance. Well, that didn't pan out. He's done everything he possibly could to address this depression. He's done everything — all the meds, alternative treatments, therapy. Nothing has worked. He wants to get better, but it's been tough. As caretakers, we have to work hard not to get pulled in. We know that if we get pulled into sadness and depression, there's no hope. When I feel that I'm getting swallowed up by it, I have to double down on exercise and ensure I see my therapist. People have to figure out what's the healthiest for them — and what they can do to live a life that feeds them some positivity. Can you travel, take vacations, visit friends and family for a short getaway? Caregivers tend to think the people we care for can't do without us. We do everything for them, but you can make things worse by sacrificing yourself.
