One Girl’s Influence In a small town in Oregon, a junior su perintendent read o f the Know Your Bible Club in our Junior page. How she longed to.start just Such a club among her boys and 'girls! But there seemed to be no in terest. Yet “prayer changes things,” we know, and the junior superintendent was praying. Then one day last August, one of the junior girls, just twelve years old, received the Lord JeSus as her own Saviour. She became a hew girl in Christ Jesus,- old things passed away, •' and behold all things became new. She gave a testimony of praise wherever she went, and began to do the things that pleased her new-found •Savioiir. What a love for the Word she now had! She found it a real joy to study her Sunday-school lesson weeks ahead. O f course, such a girl’s influence would be felt by those round about her. The Lord has beautifully used her. She has been the means of bringing in five new mem bers to her Sunday-school class, two of whom had never before attended a Sunday-School. Through her influence, toojtj;- twelve juniors have sent for Gospels of John and are now reading them, so' that they may become members o f the K.Y.B. Club. Boys and girls, the Lord Jesus needs. you, to use your influence for Him.

DANGERS IN THE NIGHT B y F rederick E. H olland *

leave Scarcely a mark where they penetrate the flesh, yet .death follows quickly and surely. Each kind of snake is a picture of sin in some form. For if “ S” stands for snakes— subtle, swift, silent, and deadly—it like wise stands for sin,, for “the wages of sin is death.” But for those stung by the ser pent of sin, crushed by its power, deceived by its attractiveness, awaiting the death it brings, God has promised salvation and a Saviour. “ The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” There fore, to thoSe who live in the far-away- land of the black boys and girls, and to all of every nation, race, and people, “ S” need no longer stand for SERPENT and SIN, but .-for SAVIOUR and SALVATION . “For as Moses.lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must tjie Son of man be lifted u p : That whosoever befieveth in him should not perish, but have eternal, life.” Again we are greeting each other with the usual; “Happy. New Year.” But I have been wondering if we really know the meaning of this greeting. W e wish that the new year might bring happiness to the one to whom we give the greeting, don’t we ? ’ It will indeed be a happy New Year if it is begun ■with/the Lord Jesus. If you have never received God’s gift of Jesus as your Saviour, do- so today, the first day of the New Year. Then I know your new year will be a happy one. You will then have Him as your Friend and Guide.every step of the way, “ for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thoU' goest” (John 1:9). This is the month, too, that we choose, year verses—a verse to help us live for Him all through the new year. The Know Your Bible Club should have a year verse, don’t you think so? You may call it your club verse if you wish. Psalm 119 til would be a? splendid year verse for K.Y.B.C. members: “ Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” As you read God’s Word, seek to “hide” it away in your heart by memorizing aS many verses as you can. You will notice, too, on our Junior page this month, a club song written for us by our good friend, Mrs. Lemmel. It was Mrs/ ’ Lemmel, you remember,, who first started the K.Y.B.C. in T he K ing I s B u siness . Learn the song and sing it wherever you have an opportunity. This will be our way of saying “thank you” to Mrs. Lemmel. In my home let others see I am growing, Lord, like Thee; Loving, helping cheerfully, A' true Christian may I be.

7 7 T h y are people afraid of UL j the dark? Jesus'.said, “If a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.” In the far away land o f the black boys and girls, people walk in dark ness..1' Jesus is the Light of the world and the Light, of life,

yet unknown, unseen, unloved, and un trusted there. The way before and the next step beyond is a.way of mystery and uncer tainty to small and big, young and old alike. Not only do many animals, fierce and dangerous, roam about in the darkness, as ^ roaring lions, but many kinds of poisonous snakes crawl and glide silently about. There are large pythons, sixteen feet and more in length, which are not poisonous; but they are dangerous because they can kill and swallow animals six times as big around as they .. are. There are red and black mambas, snakes twelve'feet, and more in length, which are very quick in movement, always ready to fight, and pre pared to strike with their poisonous fangs which carry quick.and certain death tcaUv/ who are bitten. Such snakes run on two- thirds of their bodies. The other third is upright so that they travel very fast in deed. They climb trees, swim over water and in the water, run up the side o f a wall ten feet in height, and jump from ohé tree to another. They are perhaps the most deadly snakes in the world. There are at least three kinds o f cobras which likewise grow to be twelve feet and more in length and are very deadly. They will stand erect, and spreading their necks as flat as a pancake, fasten their wicked;? bfeadlike eyes upon you, swaying from side to side and hissing their venomous rage, ready to strike with their poisonous fangs. Another variety o f cobra spits forth it#, poison in a fin,e, vaporlike spray which causes blindness to the eyes as it enters. The puff adder is often found five feet in length and three inches, in diameter. It is- very slow and sluggish in its movements, yet it is deadly when it strikes. Then there is another snake which is very much like an eavesdropper. It glides silently to where men may be gathered in council and sits in an upright position, lis tening to their words of wisdom. For this reason, it is called, in the far-away land o f the black boys and girls, “the listener of words.” It doés not bite and is not con sidered dangerous. When lying on the ground, a snake nat urally forms a:letter “ S.” When standing erect to spring and strike, they hiss forth a poisonous rage, yet in coloring and de sign they are aften very attractive and beautiful. In action, they are silent, quick, and subtle. The python entwines itself around its victim. The mamba strikes quickly and' without warning, and though its poisonous fangs, sharp and needlelike,
