“The pressure on broadband during live sport isn’t just about the stream,” Bartlett said. “It’s every phone, tablet, group chat, food order and gaming session happening at the same moment. Fans think about the snacks, the drinks, the comfiest spot and the group chat before a big match, but the broadband check is just as important. A frozen picture or delayed stream can mean missing the moment entirely.” Households expect clear connection, particularly on match nights. But their preparation doesn’t match this. 65% of people who watch major live sport at home said they had taken none of the steps that might prevent streaming issues, from checking broadband speed to arranging mobile data as a back-up or considering an upgrade. That gap between high expectation and limited preparation is the clearest takeaway for the industry. Tournaments and moments of this scale offer a valuable, real-world benchmark of network resilience and capacity planning. This summer’s football tournament evidenced the centrality of broadband to the way fans watch from home and how sharply demand can shift. From an evening in the living room to group chats and second screens at 2am, the connection was as much a part of matchday as the game itself. Fixtures outside of Hyperoptic’s typical evening peak moved demand. England v DR Congo kicked off at 5pm on a weekday, pulling the evening peak forward by around two and a half hours as households balanced football with commutes, dinner and childcare. Network data showed traffic was up by around 68% in the pre-match window. The same was true when England played Mexico – a high-stakes knockout – shifting demand with a 2am kick-off, disrupting the usual overnight drop-off. The knock-on effect lasted into the next morning too, as traffic built more gradually than usual. Higher stakes drove the biggest shifts of the tournament. This was clearest in the semi-finals, when England’s defeat to Argentina drove the highest traffic of any England match this summer. Peak traffic was 150-155% above pre-match levels, around 10-11% higher than the Spain v France semi-final the night before. The stakes mattered more than kick-off time at this stage. Behind these network patterns is a wider story about how people watch major live sport. Hyperoptic’s consumer research found that 60% of UK adults with home broadband planned to watch the tournament and 86% of this group planned to do so from home. Connection issues and buffering have a significant impact on the experience, with 59% of football viewers having found out about a goal or key moment before seeing it themselves. Football at home is rarely a single-person, single-screen activity. An average of 2.7 connected devices are usually in use per household during a major match, competing for the same connection. And 18% of people who watch major live sport at home say someone else in the house streams other TV or films at the same time, the “football widow” effect, adding to demand and potential buffering.
This summer’s football tournament gave the industry a live view into how major cultural events reshape home broadband demand. Hyperoptic, pioneers of full fibre, tracked their network data throughout the competition alongside a survey of 2,000 UK adults with home broadband. It became clear how fans at home watch, when they watch and how patterns differ. Kick-off time shaping demand was the clearest trend. “Live football doesn’t just increase broadband demand, it changes the shape of the evening at home.” said Mark Bartlett, COO at Hyperoptic. “Kick- off time, match context and the stage of the tournament all mattered throughout the summer.” For fixtures in a typical evening slot, there was a regular pattern of traffic climbing before kick-off, dipping at half-time and holding above baseline until the match ended. England’s opening fixture set that tone, peaking around 15% above the baseline. This held during England v Ghana: traffic surged more than 125% from its 7pm pre-match baseline – the highest point on the network in June.
