Why supply chain resilience is becoming just as important as engineering expertise For years, successful fibre deployments were driven by engineering excellence, efficient field execution, and competitive pricing. While those factors remain essential, another critical consideration has moved to the top of the operational agenda: securing reliable access to the materials needed to build networks in the first place. Demand for optical fibre continues to surge globally. Broadband expansion remains a top priority for governments, hyperscale data centres are investing heavily to support intensive AI applications, and utilities are accelerating the modernisation of critical grid infrastructure. At the same time, global manufacturing capacity has become increasingly constrained, making product availability far less predictable than it was only a few years ago. For operators, contractors, and network builders, this is no longer a short-term market disruption. It reflects a fundamental, structural shift in how fibre projects must be planned, sourced, and delivered.

Many progressive operators are now incorporating detailed supply planning into the earliest phases of network architecture. Utilising rolling forecasts, establishing early engagement with manufacturers, and fostering closer collaboration throughout the tier-one supply chain provide essential visibility for everyone involved.
