IESSA celebrates 20 years of lighting innovation J uly marked a significant milestone

for the Illuminating Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA) as it hosted its 20 th Annual Lighting Conference, preceded by the 2nd edition of the Technology Showcase. The Technology Showcase is rapidly establishing itself as an annual gathering for the lighting industry, providing companies with an excellent platform to present their latest innovations to industry professionals and key stakeholders. With 15 companies participating and approximately 150 attendees, the event received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all involved. The IESSA Lighting Conference spanned two days and drew delegates from across the country. The event featured engaging presentations and insightful roundtable discussions. Presentations highlighted that innovation in the lighting sector remains strong, with a noticeable shift towards advances in lighting control. Roundtable discussions focused on compliance, the integration of lighting controls, and strategies to attract young professionals to the industry. As in previous years, the conference provided valuable opportunities for networking and the exchange of new ideas to drive the industry forward.

BEKA Schréder has provided a lighting solution for a Mpumalanga coal mine I n this project, Womsebenzi, the EC&I contractor, collaborated with BEKA Schréder to implement a durable, energy- saving lighting system across various

light distributions to suit specific project requirements, ensuring maximum energy savings and performance. Transfer towers and structures LEDNOVA-MIDI LED bulkhead luminaires have been installed along the staircases of the transfer towers, ensuring uniform, effective illumination for safe movement. LEDFLOOD floodlights provide general area lighting. Their marine-grade, high- pressure die-cast aluminium housing makes them exceptionally durable and well suited to harsh environmental conditions. Within the transfer towers, a combination of BEKA VAPOURLINE industrial LED luminaires and LEDNOVA- MINI bulkheads provides reliable illumination. The BEKA VAPOURLINE is a robust and efficient LED alternative to traditional T5/ T8 fluorescent fixtures. Engineered for long-term performance in demanding industrial environments, it features a robust mechanical design that resists shock and vibration. With its high IP rating, the BEKA VAPOURLINE is ideal for dusty and wet locations. In addition to durability, it delivers excellent visual comfort with low glare and a high colour rendering index, creating safe and productive working conditions. Together, these luminaires ensure well- lit and safe transfer structures, improving visibility and operational efficiency. Underground tunnels and haulages The BEKA VAPOURLINE and ROUGHGUARD vandal-resistant linear LED luminaires have been installed to illuminate the mine’s underground tunnels and haulages. Engineered for industrial, corrosive, and harsh environments, the ROUGHGUARD is designed to withstand challenging

conditions while delivering reliable, efficient lighting performance. Its durable construction ensures long-term resistance to corrosion and impact, providing consistent illumination exactly where it is needed most. Substations and roads The interiors of the substations are illuminated with BEKA VAPOURLINE luminaires, while the exteriors are equipped with BEKABULK bulkhead luminaires. Designed for industrial and public lighting applications, the BEKABULK combines efficiency, vandal resistance, and mechanical reliability. It is certified for use in Zone 2 and in 21/22 applications, making it the ideal solution for potentially explosive environments and underground mining routes. For the roads around the mine, the LEDLUME 1 luminaires were selected to provide reliable, energy-efficient roadway lighting. Conclusion With the successful implementation of locally designed and manufactured BEKA Schréder luminaires across all key areas of the Mine, the end user has benefited from a durable, energy-efficient and sustainable demanding environmental and operational requirements of a modern mining facility, ensuring safety, reliability and performance across the site. BEKA Schréder is proud to support South Africa’s mining sector with innovative lighting solutions that enhance productivity, reduce energy costs, and promote safer, more sustainable operations. lighting solution. Each luminaire was carefully selected to meet the

Suitable for use in outdoor mining areas, oil and gas refineries, food and beverage plants, manufacturing facilities, and other heavy-duty applications, the LEDNOVA range provides high-quality illumination with reduced disability glare, improving overall visual comfort and safety. In addition, certain models in the LEDNOVA range are available for use in hazardous locations requiring Zone 1, 2, or 21/22-rated luminaires. The LEDLUME 3 streetlights illuminate the LEDLUME range delivers superior photometric performance and a low total cost of ownership. It is the ideal choice for applications seeking reduced energy use, improved lighting levels, and minimal maintenance. With a wide selection of high-efficiency optics, it offers tailored the roads running alongside the conveyors. Available in four sizes,

operational zones. The locally designed and manufactured BEKA Schréder luminaires were chosen to meet the technical requirements, ensuring top performance and maximum lumen-per-watt efficiency for each application. Conveyors Robust LEDNOVA-MINI industrial luminaires have been installed to illuminate the conveyor systems. Designed for optimal photometric performance and long- term reliability, the LEDNOVA range significantly reduces energy consumption and maintenance requirements across a wide range of demanding environments.
