VCI STUDENTS BRINGS HOME GOLD AT PROVINCIAL TRADE SKILLS COMPETITION

Service event, Grade 12 VCI student Tyler Jones secured the gold medal. The goal of the competition is to pro- vide competitors with the opportunity to demonstrate both practical and theoretical application of their skills and task knowledge relevant to trades practices, diesel engines, electrical, fluid power, drive trains, steering/ suspension and brakes, knowledge and application of applicable health and safety regulations, diagnostic and problem-solving skills as outlined by original equipment manufacturers “We take immense pride in the accom- plishments of these talented students at the 2024 Skills Ontario Competition,” says Andy Carruthers, Lead Technology and Design Teacher for the UCDSB. “Their success not only highlights their individual talent and hard work, but also underscores the dedication and commitment of educators and support staff in fostering a culture of excellence and innovation within the UCDSB.”
One student from Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) took home the gold prize at the Ontario provincial SKLZ competition last week. Forty students represented the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) at the 2024 SKLZ Ontario Competition held in Toronto, May 6 and 7, where 2,800 students from across the province showcased their skills across a wide variety of subjects across the manufacturing, construction, service, and technology sectors. The 2024 SKLZ Ontario Competition offers an opportunity for top students to demonstrate that they are the best of the best in their field. Winners are awarded with gold, silver or bronze medals, some with monetary awards, and the opportunity to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition. In the Secondary Heavy Equipment
