Welcome
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Sentry School of Business and Economics, I welcome you to our 2025 Spring Awards Dinner. I am very excited to get together once again to celebrate and honor our outstanding students and faculty. Thank you to Associated Bank for its generous support of tonight’s festivities. Through your generosity we can celebrate in the presence of so many family members and friends. Thank you as well to our generous donors who make tonight’s awards possible. From your generosity we have been able to give away $111,500 to students tonight alone! Your gifts truly impact student lives. We are especially pleased to welcome members of the Business Advisory Council (BAC) and our Corporate Partners. The BAC guarantees the relevance of our programs by providing input from our business and community stakeholders while our Corporate Partners help our students connect with local businesses. We appreciate your help in all our efforts. Our strong business and community partnerships help Sentry School meet its mission of developing career-ready graduates through applied learning. The Anderson Classroom to Career Center is the core of that mission, with the Mundt Internship and Career Readiness, Smiley Professional Events, and Corporate Partner programs all focused on getting students out of the classroom and into the business world. At the graduate level the MBA program is committed to the same goal, transforming both young and seasoned professionals. Through these programs we continue to innovate, providing students with new opportunities to develop and showcase their skills. Finally, I would also like to thank UW-Stevens Point administration for their support, and our wonderful faculty and staff for their creativity, hard work and dedication to our students. Together we are turning UW-Stevens Point and Sentry School into a standout destination for business education. Enjoy the evening! Kevin Neuman, Ph.D. Head, Sentry School of Business and Economics

STEVE AND SHARI DAY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP After completing his associate degree at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Michigan, Steve Day transferred to Northern Michigan University in Marquette and received a bachelor’s degree. Even though his education was earned through the G.I. Bill, Steve applied for a veteran’s scholarship and was awarded for his two years at NMU. Steve was very grateful to have that additional money. Steve and Shari are pleased to be able to sponsor this scholarship at UWSP for a deserving veteran, drilling reservist or guardsman, or student. Also, the Day family views this scholarship as a tribute to Dr. Tom McCaig who was instrumental in establishing Steve’s philosophy on leadership and Dr. Bill Kirby who was very supportive and encouraging as Steve pursued his master’s degree. not have had the ability to finish her course work and obtain her degree. With that degree, she went to Chicago, where she met her husband, Jeffery, and where she spent many years in the Chicago educational system. This allowed her to make a difference in the lives of her students, just as Dean Warren Jenkins made a difference in her life. Jeffery Fiddler was a very successful person in the computer technology area. Their combined gift will support worthy UWSP students in perpetuity. W.B. GREATON SCHOLARSHIP Wilson B. TRISH AND MICK HOWEN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS SCHOLARSHIP
Trish and Mick Howen graduated from UW-Stevens Point after serving in the U.S. Army and starting a family. Trish started her accounting career at the UWSP Foundation and is currently the director of accounting for The QTI Group in Madison. Mick worked at the Central Wisconsin Economic Research Bureau while attending UWSP and is currently a director with the Madison Metropolitan School District. Although they were both fortunate to receive scholarships while attending UWSP, there were none available to part-time students, such as Trish, through the School of Business and Economics. As a sign of their appreciation to UWSP for helping in their professional success, they established this scholarship to help part-time, non-traditional students with financial need who have responsibilities outside of school that make their pursuit of education challenging. KEVIN AND JORDAN ILE SCHOLARSHIP Kevin and Jordan Ile first met on campus at UW-Stevens Point as freshmen in 2015. Both Kevin and Jordan chose UW-Stevens Point as a result of program reputations, the central location of the university, and the on-campus culture. Spending six years in the Stevens Point area earning bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees at UWSP, Kevin and Jordan made a number of connections with other students and faculty members that they’ve held close as they relocated outside the area to follow career opportunities. Because of these meaningful connections and the impact UWSP has had on them personally and professionally, Kevin and Jordan were naturally encouraged to give back to students in need of additional financial support. MARLENE A. JENSEN-CABLE PEO SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was established by Dick Cable in memory of his wife, Marlene. This scholarship is part of the Cable Family of Funds, which also includes the Ethel and Ward Cable Family Heroes Fund. Marlene’s parents were living in Rosholt at the time of her birth at St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point. Her father had a dental practice in Rosholt; however, after his discharge from the Navy in 1945, Dr. Jensen moved his practice and family to Stevens Point where Marlene attended school. Prior to her senior year in college, Marlene and Dick Cable married on
16
Aug. 8, 1959. About the middle of her final semester, Marlene signed a contract to teach in Whiting/Stevens Point upon graduation in June. She was forced to terminate the contract when she found out she was pregnant. The school system did not allow a pregnant woman to teach at that time. How things have changed. Marlene and Dick, and their four children, Kurt, Dan, Kathy and Jodi, moved to Eau Claire in 1972, where Marlene continued to be a full-time mom. She did find time to get involved in several community groups including Trinity Lutheran Church, PEO, the University Book Group, and UW-Eau Claire Foundation. One group in which Marlene was particularly passionate was the University’s Single Parent Scholarship Fund which she helped start. What she liked most about this fund, was that it helped women with children and very few resources, obtain a college education. It was most fitting that when Marlene passed away in 2009 after a long siege with liver cancer, friends began a new Single Parent Fund at UWEC in her honor. The fund was named “The Heroes Fund” in which Marlene was to be the FIRST Hero, with others being named and added in the future. Everyone has a hero, and Marlene has been a hero to her family and friends, for SURE! NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL BOB TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIPS Northwestern Mutual has a long history of tradition and in keeping with that tradition established the Northwestern Mutual – Bob ‘Rap’ Taylor Scholarship in 2010 to not only support higher education of others but to honor Robert T. Taylor who served as a managing director for the Stevens Point area from 1974-2008. During his 34 years as managing director, Bob not only grew his personal practice in the financial services industry by qualifying for Million Dollar Roundtable every year but also took time from his practice to mentor 58 college interns while raising his family in Stevens Point. Bob’s commitment to grow young professionals resulted in several interns becoming some of the most productive in the company, and while some interns moved on to other successful careers, they’ve continually thanked Bob for having spent his time providing guidance during their time at Northwestern Mutual. Bob’s values, passion for learning, and endless pursuit of excellence exemplified during his tenure as managing director is what makes every person in their community hopeful that tomorrow will be better than yesterday. Although Bob has stepped down from the managing director role, he continues to work with his clientele, and along with his wife Mary, continue to support the Stevens Point community.
