REFLECTIONS ON THE YEAR WHAT 2018 TAUGHT ME

And just like that, 2018 has come and gone. As we renew our calendars and plan for the future, I find it beneficial to look back on the year that was. After all, when you want to determine where you go next, it’s always a good idea to keep in mind where you’ve been. Reflecting on the past year, I am struck by just how lucky I am for the people around me. Our firm has transformed in the past year, literally. Our renovation was completed this spring, and the impact of the changes has been great for the whole team. Everyone has their own office space now, a welcome change from the cramped conditions we were temporarily in before renovations were complete. Now we can collaborate when we need to, while also being afforded our individual space when we simply need to drill down and work.

matters most: helping the people you serve. This is especially true in the legal field, where plenty of competing goals, motivations, and ambitions can muddy the water. But when you find people who share your commitment, who are passionate about their work, and who are willing to learn, something amazing happens. In all my years as an attorney, I can say that I’ve never been more proud of the team I have standing with me today. Across the board, I have seen members of our firm rise to the occasion in the past year. It has taken a tremendous amount of weight off of my shoulders, and I just want to take the time to say how much I appreciate it. To our veteran members of the firm, thank you for always providing me with your perspective and advice and for helping me keep this firm moving in the right direction. As for our newer additions to the team, your willingness to hit the ground running and learn all you can has been inspiring to see. Together, our firm resolved a great number of new cases last year. Being able to help so many people simply wouldn’t be possible without trust, respect and hard work. Thanks to my team, I’m confident we’ll carry this momentum into the new year, meeting even more milestones along the way. If 2018 taught me anything, it’s that you need to appreciate the people in your life, at work as well as at home.

That includes those I represent. As I look back on the year, I recognize that I don’t have the full picture. Just as I rely on my team to give me feedback and advice, I would love to hear things from your perspective. What are we doing right? Where were our missteps? What would you like to see more of? Whether you’d like to give us feedback over the phone, or leaving a review for us on Yelp or Google, we’d appreciate hearing what you have to say!

“IN ALL MY YEARS AS AN ATTORNEY, I CAN SAY THAT I’VE NEVER BEEN MORE PROUD OF THE TEAM I HAVE STANDING WITH ME TODAY.”

Happy New Year,

Our firm has changed in more intangible ways as well. In any business, it can be difficult to unify a team behind a clear vision of what

MOM REALLY DOES KNOW BEST 3 WIVES’ TALES PROVEN TRUE

GARLIC CURES COLDS For decades, moms have professed the healing properties of garlic, suggesting it can cure colds and help the body fight sickness. It turns out they were absolutely right. Garlic has antiviral properties that strengthen the immune system and nutrients that help combat illnesses. The effects of garlic can actually be more effective than over-the-counter flu medications. Some studies show that regular consumption of raw garlic lessens the likelihood of getting a cold, so if you feel a tickle in your throat, try a clove before you open the medicine cabinet. HEARTBURN MEANS A HAIRY BABY It’s hard to list wives’ tales without bringing up one about pregnancy. Many are solely based on intuition, but a few that sound

“Make a face like that, and it’ll stay that way forever.” You may have heard something like this from Mom’s book of wisdom. Maybe you never disputed the idea that mother knows best. But as you grew up, it slowly became clear that hair doesn’t grow back faster and thicker if you shave it, cracking your knuckles doesn’t cause arthritis, and gum doesn’t stay in your stomach for months after you swallow it. After a whirlwind of wives’ tales over the years, many common claims have been put under scrutiny. Wives tales have been known as pseudoscience and blind intuition, but even as many were disproved, some surprisingly proved to hold weight. Here are three wives’ tales that have proven to be true.

odd are legitimate. In 2007, a study done by Johns Hopkins attempted to debunk the myth that heartburn during pregnancy would mean a hairy baby at birth. Instead of proving it wrong, they found that 82 percent of women with severe heartburn during pregnancy gave birth to hairy babies. Turns out the hormones that cause heartburn in pregnant women also affect fetal hair growth. JOINT PAIN PREDICTS THE WEATHER Did you ever look at your mom with skepticism when she would predict rain because her knees hurt? If so, you might owe your mom an apology, because there is a scientific connection. The drop in barometric pressure that’s common during storm weather causes pain in arthritic joints.

EYES ON RECORD EXPUNGEMENT MISTAKES YESTERDAY, NEW BEGINNINGS TODAY

One night, one mistake: That’s all it takes to change your life forever. Maybe you knew a friend who had messed up in the past, but you never thought it would happen to you. Then, one fateful night, you stayed too long at the wrong party, had a little too much to drink, or got in the car with the wrong group of people, sealing your fate. It’s safe to say that most people have made one thoughtless mistake in their lives that could have landed them in some serious trouble. You’re not alone. Here’s the good news: This thoughtless mistake no longer has to follow you around, haunting your record and preventing you from moving up in the world. There may very well be a way out of it. With modern technologies and improvements to digitized criminal database systems, there has never been a better time to look into getting your criminal record expunged. The process of expungement starts with an attorney submitting an appeal to the court on your behalf to withdraw a guilty plea or have the case dismissed altogether. If all goes as planned, you will then be relinquished of the charges and your record will once again be clean. However, the first step toward a new lease on life is to complete your probation without violating your terms or otherwise being charged with any new offenses.

The court will determine your eligibility by examining several factors when looking at whether or not you qualify for early termination of probation or eventual expungement. By paying all your fees, fines, and reparations; completing your community service; attending all your required court appearances; and abstaining from any more convictions, you will likely be rewarded with the expungement. This is, of course, depending on the severity of your charges. Regardless of your offense, it is infinitely more helpful and comforting to have a lawyer advocating for your case on your behalf. To put your mind at ease, an expungement lawyer can better explain this process to you and help determine what steps will be required to expunge your record. We’re here to help our clients get back on the right path. To find the legal pathway that’s right for you, contact attorney Elliott N. Kanter today and start your journey toward a new beginning.

ARE THERE HOLES HIDING IN YOUR INSURANCE POLICY?

When it comes to auto insurance, California law is pretty cut and dried. If you have a vehicle and drive it, you are legally obligated to have insurance. Despite this mandate, it’s estimated that as much as 20 percent of California drivers are uninsured. Another 20 percent have the bare minimum in coverage. You may think that these drivers are only hurting themselves by hitting the road without insurance, but you’d be mistaken. If you’re injured or your car is damaged and an uninsured driver is at fault, you’re going to have a hard time obtaining compensation from them. Luckily, there’s a type of coverage designed for exactly these kinds of cases. It’s called uninsured motorist (UM) coverage, and everyone should consider adding it to their policy. In California, insurance providers must offer UM, as well as underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage, whenever somebody enrolls in a policy. However, drivers don’t have to accept the offer and can waive these coverages. In effect, that means many drivers don’t know whether or not they have these beneficial options in their policy. The best time to find out whether or not you have them is BEFORE you are in an accident. The minimum liability requirements for insurance policies in California are $15,000 in injury coverage per person, $30,000 in injury coverage per accident, and $5,000 in property damage coverage. It’s very easy to exceed these numbers in a serious accident, so it’s a great idea to have UIM coverage in your policy. In addition to UM and UIM, providers also offer uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI) and uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) coverages. These are supplements to UM that can further protect you from uninsured drivers. Whether or not you have these types of coverage, the best way to make sure you receive the compensation you deserve after an accident is to work with an experienced attorney. If you have questions about your policy, give us a call today. We’d be happy to take a look.
