to know. Their very altar “ To the Un known God” revealed how vague and un real were their conceptions of the only true God. It showed also their consciousness that their other religious observances were inadequate. Being “very religious” was not enough; these people needed salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ.

A man scoffingly asked, “What advan tage has a religious man over any one like myself? Does not the sun shine on me as on him this fine day?” “Yes,” replied his companion, “but the Christian man has two suns shining on him at once—one on his body, the other on his soul.”— C harles H addon S purgeon . II. M ethods of C ounterfeiting “Look w.ell to the money you receive, for many counterfeits are being circulated.” This'warning often appears in our news papers, and we do well to heed it. Coun terfeiters reap their largest illegitimate harvests from the manufacture of gold coins containing a large amount of gold, but not as much as genuine coins contain. Sometimes alloy is added. Still other coun terfeiters work on genuine coins. They saw them through, remove the interior, fill up the space with baser metal, and unite the doctored coin by brazing. The outside in every case is real gold, the alloy hidden. Something similar is being done today in the» deceiving o f the church. False teach ers are removing the gold of the atone ment from the gospel and are substituting the alloy o f reformation. Some are deny ing the deity o f Christ and are proclaiming the divinity o f man. “ Look well to your religion,” and do as we are so often told by manufacturers, “Accept no substitutes.” — H allock . III. T he S hoemaker ’ s R eligion “Well, have you got any religion today?” asked a Christian friend o f a Vermont shoemaker somewhat noted for the simple and joyous earnestness of his religion. 1 “Just enough to make good shoes to the glory of G od!” said the man in reply, as with an extra pull he drew his thread firmly to its place. That’s the kind o f religion we want! We need a living experience of Christ that makes each one faithful to his work; that rules behind the counter as well as in the church; that never puts the big potatoes only on top, nor all the large apples in the last layer at the top of the barrel. ,— S elected . IV. R eligion — F ire E scape There are some who view religion as a sort of fire escape—nothing comfortable, desirable, or o f special value except in the last extremity, but very necessary then if one would avoid utter ruin. Alas! there are many buildings whose escapes, unthought of and neglected for years, grow rusty and out of order, and prove useless in an .hour o f need.. The Bible idea o f religion is not something at tached to life’s edifice, but something— Someone—built into it—the very founda tion stone on which it rests.—Adapted :from the Forward. V. Romans 12 has been selected wisely as the “ Christian Endeavor Chapter,” and truly it is a compendium of Qiristian graces and virtues. The opening two verses are so packed full of the “meat” of the Word that the devout Christian can find spiritual food here continually. Paul uses here in the book of Romans the method he employs in such epistles as Ephe sians, Colossians, and 2 Thessalonians: He considers first the theoretical aspect and then the practical; doctrine before duty; creed before conduct; precept be fore practice. The apostle has been setting forth in the first eleven chapters the marvelous pro vision of grace, the sovereign love of God in offering redemption to both Gentiles and Jews, and in adopting us as sons. He closes chapter 11 with the exultant cry: “ O the depth of the riches both of the wis dom and knowledge o f God!” Now he turns to believers, saying: “I beseech you therefore." He feels that he can present their obligations now. In view o f what God has done, what should we do ? Notice that Paul does not command or order. He beseeches. It is a tender word, winsome, loving, appealing. It isSa favorite word with Paul. He uses its sweet persuasive tone in most o f his epistles. The gospel pleads; the grace of God beseeches. But the motive is compelling: “the mercies of God.” The plural number is used, remind ing us o f God’s compassion in manifold forms. God’s mercy is to be the cause o f the Christian’s sacrifice. The time of offering sacrifices o f animals on an altar has passed. “ The Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” has been slain. The Lord Jesus signified the accomplishment of our redemption when He cried: “ It is fin ished.” But Paul says: “ Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable serv ice.” What does he mean by “present” ? The verb implies: “to yield,” “to give, never to be taken back,” “to cease to with hold,” “to cease all efforts of self.” When the Christian presents himself “bodily” be fore the Lord, he is yielding his entire per sonality to the will o f God. People speak ignorantly of “making sacrifices” for God. That expression is not in the Bible and, in fact, it runs contrary to the teaching o f the Word. Who, in the face of Calvary, could speak o f making a sacrifice? The whole life should be the sacrifice—the best we have, our health, strength, time, talents—all laid on the altar for Him to accept. If this is done, the ex perience of verse 2 will naturally follow : “ Be not conformed . . . ,but be ye trans formed.” “Transformed” is the same word
