of labor. There was to be no enforced draft of either men or money; every gift was to be spontaneous and to be offered willingly. It is the same thought which Paul presents when he exhorts that “what soever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.” The overmastering love of Christ in the soul will make hard labors light, and unwelcome tasks agreeable, and sac rifices prompt and cheerful.—T. L. C uyler . V. T he I mm igran t ’ s R eply A lawyer serving on a draft board had occasion to help a young immigrant fill out his questionnaire. He explained that as an alien he was entitled to claim exemption. The young man straightened himself up, and with a high look replied: “When I came to America, I came all. If America needs Karl Klausen, Karl Klausen is ready!” Shall we not do as much for Christ—“come all” ?— C harles B rooks . MARCH 22, 1936 CONSEQUENCES OF GREAT DECISIONS J o shu a 24:14, IS Meditation on the Lesson Joshua, the fearless old man of God who had faithfully followed God through all the trying days of the capture of Palestine, is now at the sunset hour o f his life and is still concerned for his people, the chil dren o f Israel. The whole chapter is a remarkable recapitulation of God’s won drous dealings with His chosen people from Abraham’s time down to their pres ent state. At the close o f this summary, we find Joshua’s zeal poured forth in his earnest exhortation in verse 14: “ Fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.” Joshua was well prepared and fully qualified to speak thus, for he had learned from experience how important it was to be on the right side. Choice and decision are imperative in every life. No one can avoid them. Hence the call comes to each “ Christian Endeav- orer” today as it did then: “ Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” Four great facts we .find here: (1) We are here to serve some one. (2) W e are at liberty to choose. (3) We must choose “today.” (4) We must choose between two alter natives. Joshua did not ask the Israelites whether they were going to serve or not, but he asked whom they were going to serve. God will not brook a divided allegiance. “ No man can serve two masters,” said the Lord Jesus. However, we have the privilege of choosing. Invitation runs through both the Old and the New Testament, and we may accept or reject, but we must do one or the other. And we must choose “today,” for tomorrow may never come. The Word of God warns u s: “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow,” and the plea is: “Today if-ye will hear his voice . . , ” There are only two masters—Christ or Satan; the love of Christ or the love of self under Satan’s control. Why not choose now? An emphasis o f each word is revealing: -i “ Choose"— an unanswerable imperative. “ You" —personal. “ This day" —urgent. “ Whom" —Christ or Satan. “ Ye will" —a matter of volition. “ Serve" —life’s highest purpose.

A young woman once refused to come to the Saviour, saying, “There is too much to give up.” “Do you think God loves you?” “ Certainly.” “ How much do you think He loves you?” was the next query. She thought a moment and answered, “ Enough to give His Son to die for me.” "Do you think that if God thus loved you, He will ask you to give up anything that it is for your good to keep ?” “No.” “Do you wish to keep anything that is not for your good to keep?” “No.” “Then you had better come to Christ at once.” And she did.—H allock . II. O ther G reat D ecisions in th e B ible There was Abraham called to decide whether he would leave home, country, friends, and go out “not knowing whither.” All he knew was that the Lord called on him to decide whether or not he would obey. Do you suppose he dawdled over that decision? No, the Scriptures say: “Abraham . , . went out, not knowing whither he went.” Then look at that great Decision Day out in the wilderness before rugged Mount Sinai. Can you not see that great camp of hundreds of thousands of people listen ing to the voice of Moses? The first step had been to make them ashamed of their sin. Then Moses called for instant de cision. Hear his ringing voice: “Who is on the Lord’s side? let him come unto me” ! See them go forward to the side of the leader. Those who “would like time to think of the matter”: were counted as on the other side. III. A ccepting th e C hallenge A t a large open-air meeting at Liverpool, a street-corner skeptic gave a strong ad dress against Christianity, and at the close flung out the challenge, “If any man here can say a word for Jesus Christ, let him come out and say it !” Not a man moved, but two young girls on the outskirts of the crowd pushed their way to the center and said: “We can’t speak, but we will sing for Christ” ; and they sang “ Stand up, stand up for Jesus.” Every head in that crowd was uncovered, and many men were smitten with shame. •—Sunday at Home. IV. T he L in e of D ivision There are many lines dividing each con gregation. Some are rich and some are poor, some are young and some are old, some are learned and some are ignorant— ; but when the great ocean of eternity shall break upon these sands of time, all these lines will be forever washed away. But there is one line that will never be erased, and that is the line that divides those that serve God from those that serve Him not. Are you on God’s side? Do you want to be?— The Evangelist. V. His W ill There is always something more in your life that He wills to mark with the cross. — S elected . It will cost you too much to be out of the will of GodiMiRevelation.
