let us yield to this sublime control, and so experience the will of God for us. —W . G ra h am S croggie . Beloved, let us love, For love is rest, And he who loveth not, Abides unblest. — S elected . MARCH 7 Christ’s Imminent Return “ Caught up . . . to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thess. 4:17). Living in an age when “whirl is king,” and in which man has fallen a victim of his machine, the child of God can discern in the present-day lust o f speed travel a striking portent of our Lord’s return. ■“Many shall run to and fro” ! . . . The translation o f the church, however, will outstrip the fastest machine ever made. At Christ’s coming, the redeemed below will rise from the earth to meet the Lord, miles up in the air, even beyond the cosmic ray, in the twinkling of an eye. How we shall laugh at the speed records •of men when we take our flight! And praise God, it will be the speed record without a crash! Hallelujah! — H erbert L ockyer .

deaconesses, or attendants . . . “ But who ever they were,” he adds, “they were thought worthy to be mentioned with apostles, teachers, etc. Probably they had no official standing, but were the sort of brethren who can always stop a gap, and who are only too glad to make themselves serviceable in any capacity.” . . . There are thousands upon thousands of redeemed men and women who will never be num bered among the acknowledged workers or officials o f the Christian church, and who occupy obscure positions in life, faith fully discharging their daily tasks without any idea of being regarded as deserving of special mention. Yet they are surely in cluded in this catalogue of gifts, for in a very real sense they are “helps.” —F. J. H orsefield . “Elijah the Tishhite . . ” (1 Ki. 21:17). Looked at from a human standpoint, it would be difficult to conceive of a more unsuitable agent than this Tishbite for the task allotted to him............But what task is beyond the power o f the man whom God calls and trains and equips? . . . . A Northampton cobbler may bear the gospel to the benighted millions of India, and a Scottish village furnish a Livingstone for darkest Africa. History is rich with in stances such as these, and in spite of the havoc of sin the world over, it saves one from despair to remember that God is still “Lord of hosts.” . . . What encour agement lies here for the obscure, un known, unlettered Tishbites of today! H bs —S. E. B urrow . MARCH 9 God Uses the Obscure

MARCH 10 Grumbling

“ The people murmured” (Ex. 15:24). The Israelites, after their great deliver ance, lost no time in beginning to grumble, indeed to despair . . . But although the trouble was intensely real, the crisis acute, those Israelites were wrong to grumble. They ought to have known better. So should Christians! Back of the Israelites’ murmuring there was unbelief: they did not expect God to supply the need. There is usually this close connection between the two (Heb. 3:12). No wonder we are exhorted to refrain from murmuring, since this is its real meaning (Phil. 2:14; 1 Cor. 10:10), and warned to beware o f making “hard speeches” (Jude 15, 16). Moreover, the people would not have grumbled if they had remembered God’s past mercies. “ The Lord is rich and merciful, The Lord is very kind; Oh, come to Him, come now to Him With a believing mind.” —The Christian. MARCH 11 The Answered Prayer of Jabez “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested" (1 Chron. 4:10). For all eternity, Jabez will be known as having been “more honorable than his brethren.” . . . The only picture we have of this “more honorable” man is of him on his knees. But what a tremendously impor tant part in the life of man is played by OBJECTS that Talk and Teach— L. T. MARCH 8 The Gift of Helps

“ First apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, . . . helps, governments, diversities of tongues” (1 Cor. 12:28). Spurgeon says it has been thought that among the early Christians, “helps” were assistant ministers or assistant deacons, or
