inward powers, faculties, and capacities— your whole surrendered self. H g -A . B. S im pson . MARCH IS The Message of the Cross "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal. 6:14). What message has the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ for our age, for every age? . . . The cross has no compliments for humanity. Its first message concerns the depravity of man. The meaning of the cross is that mankind is utterly and hope lessly lost . . . By its pitiless condemnation of the Righteous One for the sin of the world, it throws the searching beam of divine holiness into the guilt-darkened heart of the transgressor. Under the over whelming conviction which it produces, man’s self-righteousness is utterly shamed, his morality is revealed as corruption, his choicest works, are shown to be unaccept able, and he is cast absolutely upon the grace of God.—J. A . M ac M illan . Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ my G od; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. — -I saac W atts . MARCH 16 The Bright and Morning Star "I am ... . . the bright and morning star” (Rev. 22:16). How appropriate is the descriptive ad jective “bright” ! If we do not see the morning star, it is because we are still slumbering. If ,we do not see Him, it is not because we cannot, but because we do not look . . . I tjs one of the chief glories o f the gospel that the Saviour may be seen by al!|L;; . • Neither education nor culture is demanded, no special training is required, no obscurity of earthly lot can hide Him>from our sight; even the eyes “defiled and dim” through sin and long neglect of heavenly things may behold Him in all His glorious brightness as Saviour and Friend when they turn repentant and longing in search upward. It is the god of this world alone that blinds us by chaining our gaze to this sphere of temporal things. — J. F . T aviner . “ That the trial o f your faith, being much more precious than o f gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing o f Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 1:7). Into every God-awakened life, at some time, will come a trial that may test faith and endurance to breaking-point. God, MARCH 17 God’s Tests

very wisely, is not going to let us get through with a faith that is mere credulity or superstition. The faith precious to Him, and of real worth to us, is, o f the quality of gold purified by fire. Salvation, eternal life, is “the gift of God” ; but character—the qualities that will fit us for eternal fellowship with God and His children—must be developed by a process of spiritual education. — S elected . MARCH 18 A Practical Aspect of the Blessed Hope . “Looking fo r that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). The effect of this blessed hope was very practical. It led me carefully to look through my little library to see if there were any books there that were not neces sary and likely to be further useful, and to look through my small wardrobe to be quite sure that there was nothing there that I should be sorry to give an account of should the Master come at once. It has been very helpful to me from time to time through life, as opportunity has served, to act in a similar way, and I have never been through my house from basement to attic with this object in view without receiving a great accession of spiritual joy and bless- ing.B j. H udson T aylor . MARCH 19 The Atmosphere of Heaven “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law o f.Christ” (Gal. 6:2). It is essential to family peace, harmony, and comfort, that all the members should “ consider one another.’®:',;We are respon sible to seek the good and the happiness o f those around us, and not our own. If all would but,:remember this; what different households we should have; and what a different tale would families have to tell! Every Christian household should be the reflection o f the divine character. The atmosphere should be the very atmosphere of heaven. How is this to be?. Simply by each one’s . . . seeking to walk in the foot steps of Jesus, and manifest His Spirit. He did always the things that pleased the Father.—C. H. M ack in tosh . “ Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and bless ing" (Rev. 5:12). You have to learn to make Jesus King; you have to put the government upon His shoulder; you have to present your body a living sacrifice—the Bible puts it in all these ways. But you cannot do it alone. And then God, in His mercy, comes near to you and enables you to do it. God the Holy Ghost who is in your heart now by reason of your having received Jesus Christ, dwelling in your heart in consequence of that faith of yours, will enable you to do it, as He enabled our blessed Lord to offer Himself without spot unto God. — J. R ussell H owden . The fullness of the Holy Spirit is the inheritance of all believers.— W . H. A ldis . MARCH 21 No Need to Fear “I will never, never, let go your hand! I will never, never, forsake you!”/ (Heb. 13:5, Weymouth’s translation). MARCH 20 Making Christ King
