This is the latest book from the prolific pen o f this well-known Bible teacher, author, and editor. Part One is entitled “ Hopeless,” and in the six chapters of this division, we find a survey of world con ditions during the first three and a half decades of the twentieth century. It is a keen analysis of the ecclesiastical, political, and social developments in the world dur ing this period. It is a dark picture that is painted, but the author does not leave us with this hopeless outlook. In the second part entitled “Yet There Is Hope,” he dips his pen in all the colors of the rain bow and paints a glorious sunrise as he portrays the coming of the Sun of Right eousness and declares that the return of the Lord is the hope of Israel and of the nations. All preachers, teachers, and Chris tian leaders should , read this volume as well as the two preceding books by Dr. Gaebelein, The Conflict of the Ages, and World Prospects. 193 pages. Our Hope Pub. Co. Cloth. Price $1.00. Epochs in the Life of the Apostle John B y A. T. R obertson With the ring of authority and the rev erence of faith, this recently published study adds a new contribution to the Epochs series (Jesus, Paul, Peter, John) by the late Professor of New Testament interpretation at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. . Necessarily, a large portion of the discussion deals with problems and theories o f historical criti cism as they bear upon the authorship of the Gospel of John, the Epistles, and the Apocalypse. Keen enjoyment is in store for the reader who thus traces the sources for this eminent Greek scholar’s belief in the Johannine authorship of all of these portions of the New Testament. The phases in the development of the character of the “ beloved disciple” constitute the principal theme of the book. There are also strong chapters giving analytical and expository treatment o f the writings of the apostle. 253 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $2.00. Talks in Crayon and Chalk B y E lla N. W ood This attractively illustrated book brings suggestions “for the use of Sunday-school teachers and Junior workers who think Hopeless— Yet There Is Hope B y A rno C. G aebelein

they cannot draw,” simple group exercises suitable for Children’s Day programs, games that aid in Bible study, and elemen tary handwork. Some workers may doubt the wisdom of the three or four exercises which use imaginary conversations in dramatizations of Bible stories. But the author’s evangelical purpose is clearly evi dent, and her chalk talks carry a message that honors and uses the Word o f God. It is in the variety and brightness of treat ment that the book is especially helpful, for the suggestions can be adapted to new situations very easily. 159 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.50. Every event in the closing days of our Lord’s life is dealt with in this masterful presentation of the subject. All four Gos pels are taken into consideration, and ap parent difficulties are boldly faced and frankly treated. History is consulted, and customs are referred to in the painstaking effort to describe the facts accuraely. With a new appreciation the reader will enter into the final scenes of the Saviour’s earthly life as he follows the magnificent descriptions and the discussions by the author. New sympathies will be aroused, and perplexing passages will be made clear. Because the themes which are so vital to evangelical Christianity are ade quately discussed, faith will be strength ened. All Christians should read this book, for it satisfies the mind and heart. It is an excellent volume for preachers and Sun day-school teachers. 294 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. Cloth. Price $2.00. Only those who have themselves been commissioned to go as ambassadors for Christ to foreign lands are able to write with authority regarding the qualifications necessary in a missionary. And among that number of possible authors, the two to whom the writing o f this book has fallen have been exceptionally fitted for the task by virtue of their many years o f labor as pioneers in China, and their contacts with missionaries o f all types. Already well known through their books, Through Jade Gate and Central Asia, Something Hap pened, and A Desert Journal, the authors bring to the new volume the same kind of originality of expression, exercise o f ana lytical gifts, and vividness of appeal that has characterized earlier writings. Among other subjects discussed are the ambas sador’s credentials, honor, and call, his rejected application, his relation to heathenism, his right to romance, his ad justment to senior or junior workers, and his furlough. Every outgoing missionary needs this book. Missionary societies and individuals at home need it. The study of it, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, would revolutionize all missionary work and thought that may now be spineless and ineffective. 159 pages. China Inland Mis sion. Cloth. Simplified Truth for Young and Old B y R ichard W. L ew is Children’s workers who have found the value of object lessons and chalk talks will welcome these more extended messages. Each of these eleven sermon-talks is built around a central and concrete theme, but multiplied brief illustrations and bits of humor enable the speaker to hold his audi ence throughout the longer lesson. Chil dren, and adults, too, will delight in the simplicity of the language, the familiarity of the illustrative material used, and the conversational style that seeks the partici pation of the boys and girls in developing the lesson. Reading the pages of this book, one can almost hear the replies and the laughter of the children. The messages are highly practical, dealing with the very temptations that children meet, and point ing to the Lord Jesus as Saviour and Friend. 234 pages. Hamilton Brothers. Cloth. Price $1.50. This is a second volume of communion addresses by the author, the title of the first being, In the Breaking of the Bread. This book o f twenty-five essays on the most sacred service of the Christian church reveals how the heart longing for rest and peace is brought into the presence of the Burden-bearer at the Holy Communion Table. There is here portrayed a Saviour who can cure the troubled heart, the One who in the hour o f depression and grief ministers courage and consolation. A few of the chapters o f this deeply devotional book are: “The Miracle o f Memory,” “How Christ Said Good-bye,” “Where the- Heart is Hushed,” “The Sermon in the Sacrament,” and “ Longing for Commun ion.” I 128 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.25. Dr. Bergsma’s book gives a concise but comprehensive account o f Ethiopia as it is today. The author has given much time to the study of informative books on Ethiopia, many of which are more or less inaccessible to the general public. His work presents the results o f his study, together with the touch of nersonal ex perience which makes the book readable and valuable. There are three divisions in the book. The first, entitled “A Medical Missionary in Ethiopia,” gives interesting sidelights on the life o f the people, and contains an account o f the coronation o f the present ruler, Haile Selassie, and the events o f the preceding period. The second section de scribes trekking in Ethiopia, presenting a good picture of travel in that primitive land. The third division gives a summary o f Ethiopian history, and reveals the auth or’s wide reading and careful selection of facts bearing on this fascinating subject. The book closes with an account o f mis sions and their achievements in that land. 294 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub Co. Cloth. Price $3.00. Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled B y J am es I.
