Hard Work and a Little Luck Good and Bad Luck Are an Opportunity for Growth

J ust over 15 years ago, I was working for a different I could convince the company to open a clinic closer to home. I prepared data and evidence to show why this move would be great for the company. I was invested in continuing my work with this company, and I wanted to see them grow. company. The commute was very, very long, and I knew the business would thrive in our Clermont region. I saw the need, and as I drove miles and miles each day, I knew It was a bout of bad luck. I had worked hard, made my case, and fought for this new clinic. But the company didn’t see the value in what I had compiled. There was nothing I could do to convince them otherwise. But rather than just accept it, I decided I could do something about this. I had done the work and research, and I’m a physical therapy expert. Why couldn’t I open my own clinic in Clermont? I decided that a little bit of bad luck didn’t have to remain that way, so my team and I made my vision happen, and I opened my own clinic. In retrospect, this was very daunting. I was in my mid-20s, and I didn’t know much about owning a business beyond what I had seen my father do. But I knew I could learn, and I decided it would be worth it to take the chance. It was a period of a lot of learning, research, and hard lessons, but that’s how Four Corners Health & Rehabilitation got to where it is today. Fifteen years later, we’re still here, and we love our jobs! It’s been tremendous to see how this clinic continues to grow every year. And they never took me up on my offer.

Without this kind of compassion, we could not be here today! For our patients, the concept of luck can be tricky. When we meet a weekend warrior who is coming in because of an injury or pain, they can feel down on their luck or discouraged. Our team combats these feelings by feeding into that weekend warrior’s competitive drive. Personally, I like to remind them that everyone loves a good comeback story! This is the beginning of their story, and we can get them back to the court or course with just a little work. Others just need a reminder that this injury is an opportunity to change their lives. Maybe they have been living a lifestyle that hasn’t been sustainable, and together, we can find solutions that turn this seemingly bad luck into good luck by changing their habits and hobbies. Throughout my experience in this field, I believe luck certainly exists. Some people are just unlucky with the injuries they get and the pain they feel. But pain is also an opportunity to change. And we can help you seize it.

Time to Get Back Out There! Expert Advice to Beat the Stigma of Senior Dating

G etting back into dating can be hard when you’ve been out of the game for a few decades. In fact, some would-be romantics are so self-conscious about their age that they never even try! In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’ve rounded up some expert advice on dating at any age. Don’t fear online dating. Online dating is a great way to meet people outside of your social circle, and there are many dating sites and apps specifically for singles over 50 who are ready to mingle.

Use a picture of you from this year and be proud of your age. That’s the best way to find people who will love the real you. Go to 26 different places. Prefer to meet people in person? Lisa Copeland, a dating coach who works exclusively with women over 50, recommends creating a list of 26 different places in your area, one for each letter of the alphabet, then going to those places. While you’re out, Copeland says, “You want to smile. Make eye contact. Ask a question. Give a compliment and put a question behind it.” Be present when meeting new people. Dating as a senior means coming to the table with a lot of baggage. Dating is when

people get acquainted, so be careful about sharing that baggage right out of the gate. This doesn’t mean you should never talk about heavy topics, but remember this advice from the popular dating site, eHarmony: “Early on, focus on enjoying each other’s company here and now.” It doesn’t matter if you’re 26 or 62, dating is always hard. You have to step outside your comfort zone and trudge through a series of terrible first dates. But in the end, it’s all worth it when you find that special someone with whom you can spend your golden years. Just remember, you’ll never meet that person if you don’t make the leap.

Julie Spira, a relationship expert with senior dating app OurTime, says that “Authentic

dating profiles get the best results.” Basically, don’t lie on your profile.

Explain that if they leave a health issue untreated, it may cause future health problems, and you don’t want to see them suffer. Ultimately, your empathy and encouragement are the best things a future patient needs. ‘Physical therapists teach us how to feel better.’ If your loved one is particularly independent, then it might feel insulting to suggest that they need help healing their own body. But that makes physical therapy an even better fit for them. Physical therapy is a natural, long-term healing treatment that your loved one can complete on their own; they just need professional guidance to help them get started. Physical therapists are professionals who provide people with customized

recovery plans. They guide patients through a journey of self-discovery and teach them how to manage their pain through movement exercises that make daily life easier. ‘I got you a coffee!’ Check in with how your loved one is feeling throughout the healing process, and celebrate every small victory they achieve with little gifts. It’s important to recognize hard work and progress during a long recovery, and it’s also helpful to remember that recovery may have both ups and downs, but as long as the overall trend is upwards, there’s no reason to despair. Connecting Mind and Body S tudies show that 1 in 10 Americans lives with chronic pain for more than one year. When you’re in pain, you seek a way to cope. Some might attend regular physical therapy appointments to find the source of the pain and resolve it. Others might ignore the pain and adapt their lifestyle to avoid making it worse. Either way, the body continues to sustain real damage with these adaptations, which compounds pain and can make things worse. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean healing is a lost cause. To paraphrase an old saying, the way to a dog’s heart is through their stomach! This Valentine’s Day, treat your dog to some pet-friendly goodies they’re sure to love!

INGREDIENTS • 2 large eggs • 1 1/2 cups almond flour

• 1 tbsp coconut oil • 1/2 cup dried cranberries • 3–4 tbsp coconut flour

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 325 F. 2. In a small bowl, beat eggs and set aside. In a separate bowl, combine almond flour, coconut oil, and cranberries. Pour in eggs and mix together with your hands until wet dough forms. 3. Mix in 1 tbsp of coconut flour at a time until dough easily forms into a ball. 4. Roll out dough on floured surface and cut with bite-size, heart-shaped cookie cutters. Transfer to cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. 5. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until treats are crisp. 6. Remove from oven and let treats cool completely before serving.
