ENNISKILLEN WORKHOUSE ENTRANCE BLOCK

HAUGHEY ELECTRICAL COMPLETES FULL ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION TO LISTED ENNISKILLEN BUILDING… RESTORATION PROJECT LIGHTS UP HERITAGE BUILDING

H aughey Electrical was entrusted with the complete electrical package for the £2.3m+ Enniskillen Workhouse Entrance Block restoration project, which comprised sensitive conservation work along with the demolition of unsympathetic extensions. The Grade B2 listed Victorian building, now part of Erne Campus, has been repurposed as a heritage centre and business enterprise hub. The Listed status of this Victorian building placed many restrictions on how the new electrical systems could be introduced to the structure. “Our approach was completely bespoke,” explained Jimmy Haughey, Director. “Each area had to be treated on its own merit. Services were concealed and hidden to avoid impact on the original structure, where possible.

“For example, to minimise the number of light switches on display, we installed a Bluetooth light control system. We also worked closely with the mechanical contractor to utilise the same routes for services installations.” Also, bollards were used as the emergency lighting system as an alternative to the prohibited emergency wall lights. To meet conservation requirements, lime mortar was applied to the walls and screed. This impacted the choice of products installed, particularly the floor, as only non-metallic materials could be placed in direct contact with the highly corrosive lime mortar. “This meant we had to ensure that the casing for the recessed floor uplighters was made from GRP or PVC so it didn’t corrode over time,” Jimmy explained.

Commenting on the completed project, Jimmy said he was “delighted” to play a part in the sympathetic restoration and conservation job, adding, “This showcases our ability to adapt our skills and approach to all types of building projects.”
