HAUGHEY ELECTRICAL COMBINES DELIVERY OF MODERN-DAY ELECTRICAL CONVENIENCES WITH NATURE CONSERVATION… HAUGHEY ELECTRICAL GOES TO BAT FOR INDIGENOUS WILDLIFE

H aughey Electrical’s power and lighting solutions helped create harmony between nature and humankind at the luxury 90-unit Lesley Parklands apartment development at Knocknagoney, East Belfast. The mature, wooded site – previously home to the fire-damaged Knockagoney flats – is also home to an established bat colony. To mitigate against negative impacts associated with artificial lighting on the bat habitat, Haughey Electrical installed its first-ever, low-level, bat- friendly, external lighting installation. “Artificial lighting can disturb the bats at roosting time and affect their migration patterns and feeding behaviours,” said Eddie Haughey, Director for Haughey Electrical, “so it was vitally important that we introduced a sensitive scheme that avoided unnecessary light pollution.

“Our solution provides enough illumination for residents to safely walk to and from their cars at night, without impacting their nocturnal neighbours’ flight paths!” Another novel addition to the project was the external NIE metre block, hand-built by Haughey Electrical. “This means the NIE personnel don’t need to enter the building to read the metres and allows more space for post, deliveries etc. We just used a bit of engineering knowledge to make the distribution board smaller to make it work.” In addition to lighting and general power, the electrical package included the installation of door access, CCTV, fire alarm, disabled refuge and access control. Commenting on the completed job, Eddie said, “I’m delighted that Haughey Electrical was chosen as part of the team

to deliver this contemporary project. We delivered it on time, on budget and finished to a very high specification.”
