Cheatham County Generation Site EIS Scoping Report

Appendix C Summary of Scoping Comments

Tennessee Valley Authority

I am writing to state my right to OPPOSE the Methane Plant and Pipeline. I live in Cheatham County in Ashland City, TN. The methane plant proposed would be built on the hill just over from our home and the pipeline would run through our hills and directly through our backyard and onward across the street through the rest of our land and on. We farm our fields and having a pipeline in our fields which out in the country is our “yard” surrounding our home will forever stop any production of crop on our land. We live in a rural area and our property is zoned Greenbelt. I have great concern and anxiety of the high risk of explosion and fire from this plant and pipeline. We live on 30 acres and obtained our property in hopes to one day have our daughters have property to build and prosper. Our water source comes from Sycamore Creek that is directly tied to this proposed site. Even the officials from the water department have publicly announced in the recent weeks that contamination of this water source from this proposed site would be a critical impact to the system even with the filtration system and systems in place to clean the water. There are documented “ENDANGERED Species” within the creek and property and this would negatively impact the Environment violating Federal Protection of Endangered Species. We were never alerted of any proposed site and plans that will forever change our lives until 6 days before the original deadline for Public Comment which has given the public the belief to believe we were being “intentionally uninformed” for a reason. According to the Green New Deal we are to have 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030 which this proposed Methane Gas Burning Plant and Gas Pipeline does not meet. In addition, we need clear understanding how this proposed project will protect the rural areas who are trying to grow crops and live clean, some even running on solar, and rural communities trying to do what we can to contribute positively to clean energy yet this proposed project is making us Dirty and Polluting and risk to burn our trees and land, not to mention potential death. The President of the United States in May of 2023 just devoted $11 Billion Investment to Advance Clean Energy across RURAL America but how does that include polluting our water source, running pipelines through our hills and land – blasting our farm land, risks of burning everything we have for miles, etc.? The Federal Government has documented gas leaks of 26.6 billion cubic feet of Methane Gas from 2010 – 2021 which is equivalent in its effects on GLOBAL WARMING to emissions from more than 2.4 million passenger vehicles driven in a year. The frequency of gas leaks has not declined despite time and money spent to address leaks in the wake of deadly explosions. A major gas leak happens every 40hours and we are terrified to have this come through our yard, community, or anywhere. The TVA should take IMMEDIATE action to address climate change and transition to clean energy. I recently heard the community should propose an alternative to this proposed site…..Well, just as I tell people all the time……If I need to propose the clean energy solutions I expect compensation by TVA and a permanent job as that is your job. I am a nurse for the past 19 years and I don’t go to patients and tell them to tell me what to do to care for them and then I will do it. I was trained and have spent the past 19 years in the profession and it is my duty to provide care to patients and families with the utmost integrity. Providing safe, high quality care….the same I fully expect from TVA. The TVA must immediately stop any further production of this proposed site and offer the community an official TVA presentation with full disclosure and time for public questions. And we don’t want another meet and greet presentation in a small room where we look at poster boards. We deserve an actual TVA speaker who speaks to the community at one time in a large space that is quite and the community can hear and have time for questions. The TVA can not continue legally in accordance with Federal protection with this proposed project through our water source and also killing endangered species. If this project moves forward we need lifelong compensation to survive since our crops will be gone and also compensation for lifelong therapy for our children and ourselves of the anxiety and fear of explosion that is a realistic threat. We live in a rural area and have also been told by the TVA Representative that this proposed project will be built to support West Nashville so then move it to West Nashville if they need it and want it. Don’t come to the Clean rural area and risks burning us up and destroying our land and produce and livestock for the Big City. Take the industrial to the Industrial area. We have been told our electric bills will increase and I have been told directly by realtors no one will buy our properties and that yes, despite what you all are saying…our property values will decrease with the pipeline running thru the land and yards and not to mention the massive methane gas plant at our back door and within very short distance TWO Major schools in our county. Who will produce the documentation and guarantee by the federal government that there will be no fire, no explosion, no contamination of water, no noise, no smell, no increased bills, no decrease in property value, no danger to the wildlife and endangered species, no risks to our crops and production of farming on our lands and risk to our wildlife which is hunted for food source, etc. ???? Again, Stating my right to Oppose Methane Gas Plant in Cheatham County and Gas Pipeline. It is clear gas has no place in a modern clean energy network. Gas leaks and pipeline incidents are common and put public health and safety at risk. A 2020 study, estimated that there are more than a half million leaks in local gas systems in the US and that leakage from these systems was FIVE TIMES Greater than the amount estimated by the EPA. There is growing availability of safer alternatives and the TVA has an obligation to protect our nation and future generations and climate. Eliminating one plant just to turn around and build another is not the solution.
