Appendix C Summary of Scoping Comments

Tennessee Valley Authority

I am a Tennessean and a scientist. I ask that you to immediately align Tennessee Valley Authority policy with climate science and energy justice. I reiterate that the climate emergency demands immediate action to prevent further damage. In January President Biden mandated that the electricity sector achieve zero emissions by 2035. TVA should spearhead this historic initiative through a just, equitable transition to 100% renewable energy to meet this goal.

Appalachian Voices Public Scoping Comment Letter

I and my colleagues feel that TVA has been avoiding the solution to our climate and pollution crises. TVA has continually failed to address these crises when given the opportunity to effectively transition to clean, affordable, and resilient energy — like rooftop solar and energy efficiency. Furthermore, TVA’s most recent long-term planning document — the 2019 Integrated Resource Plan — projects a 4-gigawatt new fossil gas buildout and more than 34 million tons of carbon pollution in 2038. This plan will cost Tennessee Valley residents, and we will be paying for polluting infrastructure and fossil fuel energy plants that damage our health and climate. This situation is unacceptable. negative Debra Dunson 37174 Knowing what we do about fossil fuel gases, it is suicide to keep pouring money into outdated technology that is killing our planet. Don't build an old plant (methane) but invest in solar, wind, biofuel and other non-fossil energy sources. negative John Duggan 97530

News flash, June 24, 2023: "Temperatures in south Texas expected to remain in the 110 to 120 degrees f range for the next week, at least."

Appalachian Voices Public Scoping Comment Letter

Add this to the worldwide bloom of environmental disasters and ask yourself, when is the time to finally haul out the lifeboats and abandon this derelict fossil fuels ship? For MILLIONS of people and many entire species of animals and plants, it is already too late. We have all seen the canary in this particular coal mine. It is dead as a doornail. Energy planning can no longer prioritize the profits of a dangerous, murderous, obsolete industry over the life and health of this world. The newer, more appropriate technologies are available and more affordable. There is n o excuse to prolong the destruction, such as will be prolonged by this proposed plant.

These gas plants and pipelines would emit harmful pollutants that threaten air and water, risk lethal explosions and could cause property loss for landowners.

This gas build would also fail to deliver for the region’s workers and economy. While the Cumberland Fossil Plant has previously employed over 250 people, TVA’s proposed gas alternative would only create about 25 to 35 permanent jobs. A recent study commissioned by Appalachian Voices shows that clean energy is a reliable and cost effective replacement that would create far more jobs, providing a permanent boost to local economies.

Do you understand the climate crisis?! What in the name of all that is intelligent makes you want to develop more fossil fuels. Are you taking bribes from the fossil fuel industry? If not, what is your excuse?
