Topical Updates: Site Selection

Why is this site being considered relative to other alternatives?

TVA recognizes the importance of public land to the region. Hence, TVA has adopted policies to continue to manage its lands to protect the integrated operation of the TVA reservoir and power systems, to provide for appropriate public use and enjoyment of the reservoir system, and to provide for continuing economic growth in the Valley. Many of the region’s parks, recreation areas, and wildlife refuges were developed from lands that TVA made available. Additionally, TVA’s lands often have been the catalyst for the public and private economic development that supports all these activities. The process undertaken for TVA to select land entails a thorough set of preliminary research steps to determine the viability of potential site locations. Criteria for land acquisition covers myriad of factors, including the ability to build and operate with minimal impact to surrounding environments and communities; cost to acquire, build, and operate; proximity and access to existing infrastructure and resources; and power needs of the system and local community, among many others. Even after a site is targeted as the leading option, the (typically two-year) National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process is in place to thoroughly assess potential environmental impacts of an action and ensure that these considerations are incorporated into the decision-making process. As the NEPA process continues for the proposed CHG, currently available information will be shared on the TVA website on the CHG-designated Environment Review / NEPA page – http://www.tva.com/environment/environmental-stewardship/environmental-reviews/nepa- detail/cheatham-county-generation-site. Most recently, the CHG Scoping Report was released on November 2, 2023
