I n our part of Texas, I have trouble imagining a nicer season than the one we’re in right now. Sure, we get some bad weather every once in a while. But for the most part, things are mild, and the days give way to nights that still have a little bite to them. And whether April showers a whole lot or just a little, it seems like May’s flowers are always nice — even if we are a ways away from rose season! When I think about the holidays this time of year, like April Fools’ Day or May Day, it makes sense that they’re about having fun and appreciating the good things in life, big and small. And right now, I think we all need some of that excitement. If there were ever a time when people deserved a respite, it’s now, and as that break arrives with the season, I hope it lifts our spirits. To that end, I encourage everyone to do something this month that celebrates the changing weather. Maybe it’s a picnic in the park or an early-season camping trip. It could even be something as simple as bringing a jug of tea to a friend’s house and sitting on the porch with them. We’ve all got people in our lives we haven’t seen in a while, and if you can incorporate one or two of them into that celebration, all the better. It’s too early to throw parties, of course, but it’s not too early to acknowledge that, one way or another, things are moving toward a better place. I wonder if that’s not the source of April Fools’ Day in the first place. I know there’s a whole history behind the holiday, but when I think of the pranks that still make me grin years later, they’re practical jokes between friends and family that leave parties smiling at the end. We don’t talk much about those interactions in our society, I suppose because they’re a little hard to classify. It’s easy to see what’s passing between two people when they shake hands or exchange gifts, but when one person surprises another with a prank, well, what’s that really about? CAN’T ‘FOOL’ US! How Do You Celebrate the Start of Spring?

It’s about trust and knowing someone well enough to know how to push

their buttons — but only the littlest bit. When you prank someone, you’re

showing them that you know

them pretty well because you wouldn’t be comfortable doing that to a stranger, and you wouldn’t know what the

stranger is likely to react to. It’s a little bit like giving a gift to someone, except instead of handing them a present you know they’ll like, it’s a prank you know will leave them laughing. And of course, pranks are all about not taking things too seriously. Certainly, we’re all guilty of that from time to time, and if winter is seen as a more serious time when people have historically struggled, then spring is the transition into a lighter-hearted approach to the world. And nothing says “lighter-hearted approach” like a whoopee cushion or fake spider!

FINANCES IN 60 SECONDS

They say money makes the world go round — so, then, why are so many people financially illiterate? According to a study that examined 150,000 people across 140 countries, only 57% of Americans were financially literate as of 2015. Other studies, like those done recently by the National Financial Educators Council, have found that only 16% of Americans ages 18–26 are hopeful about their financial future.

However, there is a caveat to those relying on TikTok for financial advice: Don’t. While the good influencers creating the videos do offer sound advice worth considering, there are plenty of uninformed “experts” that spout bad advice. Plus, the short length allowed on each video means video creators have to boil down complex market advice into short sound bites. The bottom line is that TikTok personal finance accounts are great introductions to financial literacy, but they cannot replace expert advice and information. If you want to check it out or offer the Gen Z in your life some quick finance tips, check out these well-established influencers. Humphrey Yang — @humphreytalks Yang is verified by TikTok, which means he’s been authenticated as an online public figure, and he’s amassed more than 21.8 million likes. His advice ranges from breaking down the latest trends in the market to

highlighting common financial ideas in simple terms.

Rahul Rai — @thelaymaninvestor Any investment advice should always be properly vetted, so Rai’s videos feature him performing “duets” with other personal finance accounts to critique or promote their advice. Delyanne Barros — @delyannethemoneycoach Pulling from her personal experience and candidly sharing her best practices, Barros has amassed nearly 173,000 followers and offers insights into how the market works. Barros’ goal is to retire by 45, and followers can watch along as she pursues that dream.

TikTok influencers are hoping to change that.

TikTok was launched in 2016 and slowly grew before booming in 2019 and becoming a household staple in 2020. Personal finance experts, like advisors, teachers, and economists, saw an opportunity amid the dance crazes and lip-syncing. Today, personal finance TikTok creators are becoming increasingly popular on the app and offer quick tips about common financial mistakes, saving for retirement, and understanding weird market trends, like the insanity with GameStop, Reddit, and the stock market in January 2021.

WHEN IS IT TIME TO GO TO THE DENTIST?

“When do I need to go to the dentist?” We hear this question all the time, and now we have a question for you: What would your answer be? Just go right ahead. We’ll wait. What did you come up with? Common answers might be: “When your teeth hurt,” “If you can see discoloration or staining,” or “If you notice your crowns are wearing thin.” All of these are good answers, but it’s actually a trick question. Ideally, going to the dentist isn’t about addressing a current problem at all. It’s like having the oil changed in your car; It’s a routine trip you make twice a year to avoid more serious problems (like the ones discussed above, for example). That isn’t to say that, if you’re experiencing acute pain in your tooth, gum, or jaw, you should wait for your next scheduled appointment to come in for

treatment. After all, you wouldn’t wreck your ride and then wait three months to get it looked at during your next oil change, right? But those simple, regular appointments are the baseline for good dental care. We know that for many patients, this presents challenges. Not everyone can afford to be seen twice — or even once — each year. Similarly, if you haven’t been seen in years, you may need more work than we can do in a routine cleaning. We do everything that we can to make sure we make these cleanings affordable, so you’ll save money: Regular cleanings are the best way to catch problems before they become too expensive to correct! ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER

Inspired by TheSpruceEats.com SHEET PAN CHICKEN DINNER

You’ve probably heard of a one-pot meal, but how about a one-pan meal? This easy sheet pan dinner comes together in just 30 minutes without dirtying many dishes.

INGREDIENTS

2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch chunks 2 medium sweet potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks

• • • •

1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp honey 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 1 large head of broccoli, cut into florets

• • •

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper 2 tbsp canola oil

DIRECTIONS

We’ve talked in the past about our abilities to do large amounts of dental work, especially under sedation. As you know, we design, 3D print, and finish bridges and dentures right here in the office. But what if you don’t need a fully new smile or a row of three or four teeth replaced? Many patients might be tempted to just ignore one missing tooth; after all, it’s just one tooth. If you don’t care about how it looks, why bother at all? Actually, there are a lot of good health reasons for fixing that gap. Our teeth are rooted in bone, and a missing tooth puts the bone at risk for damage, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned by a dentist yet! The deep hole at the site can also easily be infected, and all kinds of bad things can get inside there. For that matter, there may still be a piece of tooth in there, as well, which puts you at risk for more complications! Finally, people with a single missing tooth that goes untreated could be putting themselves at risk for TMJ disorder, and that’s a pretty serious deal. Fortunately, this issue is usually quick and easy to treat, especially if our Texas Sedation Dental team can get to the injury soon after it occurs. If you still have the tooth, please bring it in just in case and come visit us. We’ll examine and clean the site and either put in a new implant right then or schedule for one within a short period of time. Implants are the best solution here: They are less fuss than a bridge, and they look and function just like your regular teeth! From missing one tooth to missing them all, there isn’t much Texas Sedation Dental hasn’t seen and treated. If you’re ready to love your smile again, pick up the phone and give us a call at 903-251-2858. Single-Tooth Replacement Is Important

3 Home Products That Can Slash Your Energy Bill

BOOST YOUR HOME’S ENERGY EFFICIENCY

With the development of accessible, affordable technologies and home products, improving the energy efficiency of your home is easier than ever. On top of that, many of these products give you more options for home automation so you can save money and stay comfortable without even thinking about it. Here are three investments that will boost your energy efficiency right now.

For new homes or more involved renovations, insulating concrete

forms are the most energy- efficient option.

A Smart Thermostat

A Smart Water Heater

The great thing about smart thermostats is that they offer more programmable options than traditional thermostats. For example, you can buy a thermostat that connects to your home’s Wi-Fi and is controlled by an accompanying smartphone app, no matter where you are. Another awesome feature is that smart thermostats will turn on and off based on your schedule and temperature preferences. In the long run, this feature can save you money and energy.

Generally, water heaters are not the most energy efficient — especially if you’re in a household where hot water is in constant demand. But with

Next-Generation Insulation

a smart water heater, you can change that. Much like the previously mentioned thermostat, you can control a smart water heater remotely or set it to heat water according to a specific schedule. This way, the heating elements aren’t running all day, every day. They come in tank and tankless varieties, though tankless is the way to go to maximize energy efficiency without taking up much space.

While you might be familiar with fiberglass insulation, an industry standard, there are much better options that help you maintain the temperature in your home. For existing homes, spray foam insulation is the best option, as it is the easiest to install and can still save energy. It’s also ideal for insulating attics, basements, and hard-to-reach spots.
