Ayrshire Bursts with Colour at Colour Dash

Kilwinning exploded in colour as the Ayrshire Hospice and Ayrshire Cancer Support brought the vibrant Colour Dash to Eglinton Park with over 1000 fantastic

fun runners in June. With a superb turnout, everyone enjoyed a great family event, raising thousands for both organisations as eager runners made their way around the five-kilometre course and burst through the five colour stations along the way. Tracy Flynn, Ayrshire Hospice Chief Executive, said: “What a

great day and event Colour Dash was! The Ayrshire Hospice and Ayrshire Cancer Support were blown away by the fantastic turnout. It was brilliant to see so many families out enjoying themselves.” Before the runners set off, Colin McArdle entertained them with dedicated live shout-outs,

and BetterU Fitness made sure everyone was warmed up and raring to go at the start line. Check out pages 12 and 13 for lots more fantastic photography from this year’s Colour Dash!

By Tracy Flynn, Chief Executive Officer

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the latest edition of The Article. Within these pages, you’ll find a diverse collection of stories and updates reflecting the vibrant spirit of our hospice community.

An incredible £100,000 was raised at A Night at the Euros Final held at Ayr Racecourse in April. Guests were treated to a superb sporting night, entertained by some of Scottish football’s biggest names from both the past and present. Martin O’Neill, Terry Butcher, Arthur Numan, Gordon Strachan, James McFadden, and Robert Snodgrass took to the stage for an exciting “Scotland vs The Rest of the World” quiz. The evening’s host, Mark Guidi, kicked off the night with a competitive ice-breaker game of “Red Card, Yellow Card,” which saw one lucky guest win a two- night stay at Blairquhan Estate, kindly donated by Blairquhan Castle.

The night concluded with Arthur Numan taking to the stage for an impressive rendition of the unofficial Tartan Army

Ayrshire Hospice recognised by Care Inspectorate

Capital Build Project update...

By Julia Connelly, Capital Build Project Manager

The report recognised that “people accessing the service benefit from a skilled, knowledgeable and highly motivated team of staff who deliver compassionate and responsive care” and that “staff demonstrate a strong commitment to the meaningful involvement of patients and their families in directing and leading their own care and support planning.” .......................

The progress on site over the past few weeks has been astounding, especially in and around the new In-Patient Unit (IPU). Patios are down outside each bedroom, curtain walling and windows are in place, and much of the services have now been fitted in the walls and ceilings. Floor screed has even been poured in a couple of remoter areas and the underfloor heating pipes for the large IPU circulation space are clearly visible. It has been a joy to see all this grow from a 2-dimensional plan on a piece of paper. Now it can be walked through – and it’s an impressive space which our patients and their families are going to love. The “crowning glory” is our sedum roof. It contains a lovely variety of colours ranging from bright green all the way through to deep red, and it loves being watered. Once laid down, unless consistently raining, this roof needs to be watered for 9 weeks! One of the images is Bedroom 4, which has been named Holmburn. You can see the patio and garden in the background and first fix piping and cabling throughout the room. The copper pipes on the left- hand wall indicate where the oxygen outlet will be, and therefore the head of the bed.

The Ayrshire Hospice was reviewed and evaluated in:

How well do we support people’s wellbeing? 6 – Excellent How good is our leadership? 5 – Very Good How good is our staff team? 5 – Very Good How well is our care and support planned? 5 – Very Good ....................... One family member said: “I can’t explain how good they were, they will reassure you but tell you the truth. I didn’t have to worry any more. They took the pressure off and allowed me to concentrate on my relative.” Professional colleagues who work with the Respite and Response team reported: “They are keen to know the person and their family and strive to be person-centred. They are so focused on the person and very caring and professional.” The full report can be viewed on the Care Inspectorate’s website: www. careinspectorate.com

The Ayrshire Hospice is delighted with the results of its first Care Inspectorate inspection of its Respite and Response service which saw the organisation receive one ‘Excellent’ and three ‘Very Good’ gradings.

In March, a diverse group of Ayrshire Hospice staff members had the opportunity to visit the Racecourse Road site to witness the transformative progress of our Capital Build Project. The visit was open to staff from every department across the Hospice, ensuring a broad spectrum of team members could benefit from the experience. By the end of the event, approximately 30% of the Hospice staff have now had the chance to see the progress and envision the future of our Hospice. The feedback from staff was fantastic, with everyone very excited about going home! A Sneak Peek at Our Future: Staff Site Visit Day

This evaluation marked the first assessment for the organisation since the registration of its Respite and Response service with the Care Inspectorate in 2022. Ayrshire Hospice Chief Executive Tracy Flynn was delighted with the inspection’s findings. She said: “This report recognises the incredible work that our Respite and Response team delivers for our patients and their loved ones in their own homes. “While it is unusual to receive an ‘Excellent’ grading at a first inspection, the Care Inspectorate has understood and recognised the true nature of the person- centred care that we deliver. I’m incredibly proud of our entire team. Their recognition with such a high

grading is a testament to their skills, as well as the care and dedication they demonstrate in their daily work with patients and families across Ayrshire and Arran.” “The findings in this report truly exemplify a service that the Ayrshire Hospice is rightly very proud of. Respite and Response is an invaluable service that provides a much-needed break for carers to allow them a couple of hours just for themselves, while we care for those they love.” During the inspection, the Care Inspectorate interviewed service users and professional colleagues for their opinions and experience of Respite and Response.

Ayrshire Hospice Living Well Hub opens in Kilwinning

The Ayrshire Hospice is delighted to have established a weekly Living Well Hub in Kilwinning after opening in the town’s Dirrans Centre on Tuesday 7th May. With this opening, there is now a Living Well Hub in North, East, and South Ayrshire, making it more convenient for patients to access the service closer to home. Heather Hardie, Living Well Team Manager, expressed her delight at the first meeting of the Living Well Hub in the Dirrans Centre. She said: “Since our first Living Well Hub in the community in 2021, the goal was to have a Living Well Hub that was accessible to our patients in communities across Ayrshire. “With the opening in Kilwinning, along with Cumnock and Maybole, that has been achieved and allows the Hospice to integrate more within the local community we serve.” Currently, the geographical split of Ayrshire Hospice patients is 37% from North Ayrshire, 34% from South Ayrshire and 29% from East Ayrshire. The Ayrshire Hospice Living Well Hub is an eight-week rolling programme which aims to support, inform and enable those living with a life-limiting illness. One patient who attends the Hub said: “I love attending the Living Well Hub, meeting new people

who have become really good friends. We support each other, we laugh together, helping to boost our confidence, sharing stories and life experiences and making memories.” When you are living with a life- limiting illness, it’s easy to feel isolated. The Ayrshire Hospice Living Well Hub provides a space to meet some like-minded people in a friendly, relaxed environment to help you take the first steps on your living well journey.

The James Bond Ball took place on Saturday, 1st June, at Ayr Racecourse, and what a night it was! The event raised an incredible net profit of £34,765, which will go directly towards the delivery of Hospice care and services throughout Ayrshire and Arran.

The night started with a bang as guests entered the event to find the room filled with Bond props and a stunning Aston Martin taking centre stage at the drinks reception. It was like James Bond himself had arrived! As guests made their way to their tables, they found even more surprises, including a martini glass dancer, casino tables, and an array

of wonderful prizes kindly donated by fantastic Ayrshire Hospice supporters. The evening began with a Bond medley, featuring classic Bond theme songs and complemented by glittering dancers. Host Des Clarke then guided us through the night, with entertainment from Ben Haenow, The MacDonald Brothers, Waterfront band, and the EHP

Theatre Company, who all gave us a night to remember. Thank you to all the event sponsors, including Principal Sponsor Stonefield Estate Agents, and supporting sponsors: Neogen, William Duncan Accountants, Arnold Clark, Everything Media Group, and Ayr Racecourse.

Volunteers making a difference Christine Downes of Troon volunteers her time with the organisation’s craft team, which produces many items for sale at craft fairs all over Ayrshire. “It wasn’t so much me choosing the Hospice; rather, it chose me! I moved in next door to the founder of the craft team and got involved in helping her. My involvement snowballed from there until I became a fully-fledged member of the craft team, and I now co-ordinate the craft team.” “I enjoy using my crafting skills to benefit the Hospice; meeting new people through craft team sales events and other Hospice events; the sense of purpose from being involved with the team and the Hospice in general; liaising and working with Hospice admin teams; and best of all, having fun!”

Ayrshire Hospice celebrates Volunteers’ Week

The Ayrshire Hospice celebrated its volunteering stars during Volunteers’ Week – a week-long event (from 1st – 7th June) to recognise the contribution volunteers make to society all across the country.

John Adams, of Galston, gives his time to help keep the garden at the Hospice’s In-patient Unit looking in prime condition for patients and families to enjoy.

Every month, over 200 volunteers play their role in helping to support the lives of Ayrshire Hospice patients, their families, and staff by committing their time when they can. As well as being a crucial opportunity to thank volunteers and recognise the value of their time, passion, and skills, Volunteers’ Week also acts as a chance to inspire others to give volunteering a go. Tracy Flynn, Ayrshire Hospice Chief Executive, said: “At the core of our mission lies the belief that volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation. Their commitment, compassion, and selflessness embody this belief, and the contributions of our volunteers

have made an indelible mark on the lives of those we serve. “During National Volunteers Week, we celebrate the generosity of the time they give and the kindness that they embody. All of this has a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals, bringing comfort, support, and hope when it is needed most, and also supports the staff at the Ayrshire Hospice. “On behalf of myself and the entire team at the Ayrshire Hospice, I extend my deepest thanks and admiration for the ongoing commitment and dedication of our entire volunteer team. Their compassion and generosity have touched the lives of so many, and we are truly grateful for all they do.”

He said: “I love working in the garden. I always wanted to volunteer for something worthwhile, and the Ayrshire Hospice provides such important care.

Caitlin Dawson, from Kilwinning, has been volunteering in the town’s Ayrshire Hospice shop, combining it with her studies as an Art and Design student. She explained: “I chose to volunteer as it was a good way to build my confidence and to gain some work experience. It has been good to help my community, and I’m always glad to help out and bring a smile to someone’s day. “I believe volunteering is a great opportunity to give back to the community and build on yourself as a person. It’s a great way to learn new skills and gain work experience. I love volunteering; it’s always nice to communicate with the community and give time to help within the shop. It has allowed me to express myself when making outfits and chatting with customers.”

“I have met some really interesting people, all with a story to tell, and you get lots of nice compliments from patients and visitors.”

Forty years and still going strong!

The group have fundraised in many ways over the 40 years: plant sales, coffee mornings, and selling Christmas cards to local community groups, to name a few. In 1987, they even had The Beechgrove Garden come to the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock to host a special roadshow! Since the group began, they have raised a phenomenal £278,118.34 and they are not finished! The group continues to go from strength to strength, with long- standing members bringing lots of experience and new members giving fresh energy.

By Claire Stuart-Paulin, Senior Fundraiser

Hazel said: “We simply wanted to help the Hospice, and knowing that we were helping to raise money to keep the Hospice going was all the motivation we needed. We also enjoyed organising events in our local community. Continuing the tradition of hosting such gatherings is important; it brings the community together and encourages everyone to socialise.” Annette agreed and added, ‘We all became such good friends, we did so much together, and over the years we had a lot of fun!”

The annual Cream Tea in May this year raised over £3,300 , and plans for their annual Christmas Fair in November are already in the works. Carolyn Blythe, Chair for the past 20 years, retired earlier this summer but says she will still be happy to help out at the big events. New Chair, Andrena Reid, has been part of the group since 2008 and is looking forward to keeping the group going strong. We would like to thank everyone involved with the Dunlop Friends Group, past and present. The hard work, passion and commitment shown to supporting the Hospice is truly inspirational, and we would like to wish you all a Happy 40th Anniversary!

The Dunlop Friends Group are celebrating their 40th anniversary this summer. The original five members founded the group in July 1984 when the Ayrshire Hospice was only a dream. The founding members were Anne Mundell, Jennifer Hunter, Annette Brown, Hazel Mulberry, and first Chairperson Aileen Howie. All five ladies stayed with the group for at least 35 years, each gradually retiring since 2020, with the last two, Hazel and Annette, stepping down only last year. We caught up with Hazel and Annette at the group’s annual Cream Tea last month and asked them what kept them going for 39 years.

We’re your Charity of the Year! By Elaine Thomson, Senior Fundraiser

Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2024

The Ayrshire Hospice was delighted to be chosen by various companies this year as their nominated Charity of the Year for 2024.

fundraiser for EURO 2024, and the Colour Dash, with many more activities such as sponsored walks and charity nights lined up.

By Claire Stuart-Paulin, Senior Fundraiser

The team from Horwich Farrelly began the year with some of their staff walking the 14-mile Glasgow Kiltwalk on a glorious day and another team braving the mud of the Tough Mudder challenge. Thank you for supporting the Ayrshire Hospice this year; we can’t wait to see all the exciting fundraising activities you have planned. Does your organisation or staff choose a Charity of the Year? If so, we would love to hear from you. Please contact the fundraising team at community@ ayrshirehospice.org.

The Edinburgh Marathon has sold out every year since 2008 and is the second- largest marathon in the UK, behind only London. A half marathon, 10k, and smaller routes for youths make up the weekend running festival every May. This year, the Hospice had 33 runners taking to the streets of Edinburgh, and they did us proud. Despite dull and wet weather conditions, the spirits of our runners and cheering volunteers remained undampened. Everyone completed their chosen distances, and emotions ran high at the finish line. Keep a lookout on our social channels for the final total that our Hospice Heroes raised at the Edinburgh Marathon over the coming weeks.

McDonald’s in Kilmarnock town centre held an Easter Day and raffle for customers, and staff caught the ferry to Arran to climb Goatfell. They also have a Summer Fun Day planned and much more for the community to join in with.

Fundraising is so versatile; everyone can get involved, and it can be tailored to suit every need. Our Community Fundraisers love to see what wacky, thrilling, and fun-filled ways our supporters come up with to raise funds for our beloved Hospice. Recently, we have had a few brave ladies dust off the clippers to shave their heads! Kirsty McNicol (pictured) wanted to fundraise because her mum, Barbara, and friend, Debbie, received hospice care. She raised an amazing £673.00! We also had Suzanne Gaffney, who raised a fantastic £1,291 in memory of her dear friend, Pam. Ladies, thank you so much—that took a lot of courage. We think you look great!

RETAIL DETAIL

Braemar Finance step up to volunteer

The Ayrshire Hospice was delighted to welcome Darryll Slavin as the Retail Warehouse Manager in May this year. Darryll comes from a retail background with warehouse experience, and despite not having worked in the retail charity sector before, he is thriving in this new role and learning more every day. His impact is already visible as he has started to implement some exciting changes in the warehouse. He has categorised the stock, making it accessible for all staff and volunteers, and created additional space for the donations we receive. These changes have been implemented to help increase the income the shop raises by streamlining the process of getting donations onto the shop floor of the ten Ayrshire Hospice shops in the region. Hospice Heroes become Warriors for the day!

Hospice Heroes Turn Glasgow Kiltwalk into a Sea of Purple

By Elaine Thomson, Senior Fundraiser

By Elaine Thomson, Senior Fundraiser

Colourfully clad Ayrshire Hospice Heroes turned into Hospice Warriors for the Tartan Warrior assault course event in March, raising an amazing £3,611! Set across farmland in the vast hillside of Kilmaurs, Tartan Warrior 2024 sprung to life, and what a weekend it turned out to be! With the competitive races held on Saturday in awful conditions, the sun shone brightly for the Hospice Tartan Warriors to take their place at the starting line for this 5k route on Sunday afternoon. This family-friendly obstacle race saw our Hospice Warriors tackle over 35 obstacles in what can only

be described as perfect weather. Running through burns, swinging from monkey bars, flipping tyres, and covered in mud, every warrior completed their challenge and sailed over the finish line! Our warriors went above and beyond on this challenge – well done, everyone. A huge thank you to Gavin Hogarth, owner of Fit Body Farm and the award-winning Tartan Warrior, for allowing the Ayrshire Hospice to be part of this incredible event. Thank you also to all the volunteers who looked after each runner, cheering them around the course. We can’t wait to see what next year’s Tartan Warrior has in store.

The biggest ever team of Hospice Heroes took on the Glasgow Kiltwalk in April, raising almost £45,000! The team of 197 people walked either the 22.6-mile route of the Mighty Stride, 14 miles of The Big Stroll, or the 3-mile Wee Wander. Everyone had a fantastic day raising money for the Ayrshire Hospice. With an electric atmosphere and over 14,000 people walking for various Scottish charities, it was truly the biggest and best Kiltwalk yet. The Hospice Heroes included teams from Motiv8 Fitness, Elite Fitness, Ardrossan Community Gym, Tesco Kilmarnock, Alex Begg, Phoenix Abbey, and Walking on Sunshine to name a few, as well as repeat walkers such as John Burke, Mhairi Blair, Kristina Berry, and Rachel Berry. For two of our very own hospice staff, Deborah Riseborough and Leanne Ireland, this was their fifth Kiltwalk. They are also walking in Aberdeen, Dundee, and Edinburgh this year too—good luck! Stuart Spiers from the Walking on Sunshine team celebrated a very special 50th birthday and was treated to a rendition of “Happy Birthday” by Kiltwalk staff and walkers. The youngest walkers, Fearghus and Aiden, both aged 6, walked the Wee Wander with their mums, and loved getting that medal at the finish line. Our heroes have raised £37,862.50, plus gift aid of £6,845.64, meaning an incredible total of £44,708.14 was raised for our patients and their families. A huge thank you to all our amazing walkers and to everyone who supported them on their Glasgow Kiltwalk Challenge. 2024 Events!

Did you know... The Ayrshire Hospice has a counselling service for children and young people from 5 to 18?

Ayrshire Hospice Golf Day Monday 12th August, West Kilbride Golf Club

Start the day with a bacon roll, tea, and coffee before enjoying your round in the competition. The day’s play will take the form of a Texas Scramble. Tee-off times will be spaced at ten-minute intervals, with lunch or dinner following your game.

Any child in Ayrshire and Arran who has a loved one with a life-limiting illness or who is bereaved due to a life-limiting illness can access support from our qualified counsellor. Counselling can help children become more aware of their emotions around illness, loss, and death, and recognise difficult feelings while understanding grief. This can reduce anxiety and increase emotional well-being, developing skills they can use in other life situations. We use a variety of resources, including games, art, and worry dolls knitted by our very own craft team!

Here is what the families say: ‘I can’t thank you enough for the support you have given. It’s made such a difference.’ ‘The fact that she keeps wanting to talk to you says it all.’ And the kids’ feedback? ‘I know now that I didn’t make my gran die.’ ‘I am still sad, but I feel better. I can manage it now.’ ‘Banging!’

There are only a few tee times left, so be quick! Scan the QR code to book!

Sharing the Vison through Trust and Respect - Education and Partnership Working

Ayrshire Hospice Winter Fair Saturday 16th November, Ayr Racecourse Enjoy a magical day browsing festive stalls, listening to live entertainment, visiting Santa, and taking part in our fantastic raffle with incredible prizes up for grabs. With over 100 stalls across two floors, there is sure to be something for everyone, so bring along your family and friends for the ultimate festive day out!

The Ayrshire Hospice continues to explore ways to collaborate with colleagues across Health and Social Care Partnerships. Recently, the Education Department worked with external colleagues to develop and deliver palliative education on specific care needs. This was a great opportunity to share the palliative care vision and involve our Quality Improvement Facilitator.

Working with the North Ayrshire Learning and Development team, the Ayrshire Hospice trained 42 personal carers who provide care to people in their own homes. Evaluations showed participants had a greater understanding of palliative care, its purpose, and their role in supporting those with life- limiting conditions. Care homes across Ayrshire also recognise their significant role in delivering Palliative and End of Life Care. By working with the NHS A&AHB - Care Home Professional

Support Team, we developed and delivered an education programme that was successfully piloted and continues. Finally, focusing on our own staff, we collaborated with the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice to create and deliver a new, innovative communication workshop. This positive collaboration allowed staff from both hospices to meet, improve their skills, share stories, and learn from each other.

A quick calculation revealed that those present had clocked up an amazing 169 years of service to the Hospice lottery! They also enjoyed a short talk from Chris Rodden, Director of Patient and Family Services, who spoke about the impact of their fundraising on patient care. Anne Campbell, an Ayrshire Hospice Lottery Collector, shared: “I became a Hospice Lottery

collector in 2010 after a friend, who

£25.00 per lunch Lunch served at 1.00pm

was also a collector, recommended it. Having retired the previous year, I wanted to give back to the Hospice, where my dear mother-in-law received wonderful care in her last days.”

Make a Will Fortnight

Save the date! Our Make a Will Fortnight will be returning from the 14th to the 28th of October 2024. During this campaign, solicitors across Ayrshire will make or update your Will for a donation to the Hospice. This is a great opportunity for individuals and couples to create

or change an essential document with trusted, local solicitors while ensuring the Ayrshire Hospice can continue to provide its vital palliative and end-of-life care across the community. Solicitors who have already confirmed their participation

in this year’s campaign include Austin Kelly, Carrick Robb, Smith & Valentine, Taylor & Henderson, Kilpatrick & Walker, Barnetts Solicitors, James Guthrie & Company LLP and Robert Duff & Co in Largs offer this service all year round.

At the Ayrshire Hospice, our organisational culture revolves around fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where every individual can thrive. As an employer, our goal is not just to recruit talent but to nurture a community where a passion for palliative and end-of-life care flourishes.

“This commitment extends beyond hiring processes; it’s ingrained in every aspect of our work. The evening’s celebration beautifully acknowledged the dedication and spirit of those who contribute to our mission, and we are honoured to have been part of this remarkable event.”

Exciting New Benefits for Our Staff!

The Ayrshire Hospice has recently introduced an improved benefits package to enhance the well- being of staff across the organisation. To launch the benefits bundle, the HR team visited Hospice sites across Ayrshire, offering staff more details about the new perks while enjoying a cuppa and some cake! The new package includes a range of benefits designed to enhance employee well-being and satisfaction, such as a cycle- to-work scheme, tech scheme, discounted technology, access to a credit union, and a health cashback plan. Gemma Reid, Head of HR, explained: “A robust benefits package is essential as it demonstrates our commitment to employee satisfaction, attracts top talent, and fosters a positive work environment. By investing in our employees’ holistic well-being, we create a stronger, more engaged workforce and become an employer of choice.”

We are eager to have volunteers from all walks of life join us. Whether you can support our clinical teams, work in our shops, assist with administration, help tend to our gardens, or even suggest something new, we’d love to hear from you! We’re dedicated to supporting and recognising our volunteers for the difference they make, ensuring that every volunteer has a rewarding experience with us. To strengthen our volunteer support, we have created a new role of Volunteer Coordinator. This role will be key in shaping the future of volunteering by developing and implementing our volunteering strategy, policies, and best practices. Our goal is to create the best possible experience for our volunteers. If you’re interested in donating your time or skills to support the Ayrshire Hospice, or if you’d like to learn more about Corporate Volunteering, please contact the HR team at volunteer@ ayrshirehospice.org
