Making today matter for Ben

Living Well Hub turns 1!

By Heather Hardie, Living Well Team Manager

By Stacey Kelly, Specialist Palliative Care Nurse

stand out - Ben is an avid Kilmarnock FC fan proudly showing off the Kilmarnock strip on my first visit. “He was very keen to take his 3-year-old brother Hunter to his first Kilmarnock game. Seeing Ben’s enthusiasm, I knew we had to somehow make this happen. Thanks to the team at Kilmarnock FC we were able to arrange for Ben, Hunter, and his parents to attend their game against Partick Thistle where they were treated to the full VIP treatment and truly made special memories for Ben and Hunter.” Ben was given his chance to lift the Scottish League Cup, Scottish Cup, and the Scottish Championship trophy and spend time with former player and captain Ray Montgomerie before the game. After the game, Alan Power and current captain Chris Stokes spent some time with Ben and his family.

The Ayrshire Hospice Living Well Hub celebrated its first birthday and it was a year filled with discussions, laughter, skill-building, and camaraderie.

Ayrshire Hospice works to make today matter for its patients and their families. This could be hosting an afternoon tea in the Hospice or a takeaway and a movie night for the family to enjoy. However, in the summer it was a request from one patient to take his youngest brother to his first football game.

If you or someone you care for is affected by a life-limiting illness, the Hub is a place where like- minded people can come together in a relaxed and friendly environment. The first half hour of the two- hour session is dedicated to discussing topics that inform, enable and empower people

to take part in an activity such as art, music, tai chi, or complementary therapy. Speaking about the Living Well Hub, one attendee said: "They explained the help which they can provide, allowing me to relax with the many problems in which I believed I was on my own, and could not get anyone to listen." Another attendee reported that she had found benefit in the art sessions, saying it was the first time in as long as she could remember that she

had not thought about her cancer for a full 30 minutes. If you feel the Living Well Hub may be a place that can help you, find out more about the programme and self-refer on the website (QR code above). The sessions run: Mondays in East Ayrshire Community Day Hospital from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Tuesday mornings (10:30 -12:30) and Wednesday afternoons (14:00 – 16:00) in CentreStage, Kilmarnock.

Ben Montgomery was a massive Kilmarnock fan who wanted to take his brother along to Rugby Park and cheer on their heroes together for the first time. Ben’s Specialist Palliative Care Nurse, Stacey Kelly visited the Montgomery family at the beginning of the summer to support them as best as possible.

Stacey explained: “Ben, 20 years old, was diagnosed with Leukaemia in the summer of 2021 and he underwent treatment at the Beatson Teenage Cancer Trust Unit in Glasgow. Unfortunately, in June this year Ben’s disease relapsed and there were no curative forms of treatment available to him. “He was discharged home from the Beatson at the end of June and referred to the Ayrshire Hospice Community Specialist Palliative Care Team for support to him and his family. When I first met Ben he didn’t have many goals other than to spend time with family and get back out to the local fishery. But one goal in particular did

to live well with illness. People are welcome to

come for the whole session, the topic discussion on its own, or just for a cuppa and chat with the opportunity

Clinical Governance and Practice Development

A Day in the Life!

“We will create a facility that is truly fit for the future…”

By Odette Landsburgh, Capital Campaign Corporate Fundraiser

By Alana Struthers, Head of Clinical Governance and Practice Development The Clinical Governance and Practice Development Team were proud to showcase their efforts to continuously drive forward service improvement within the clinical teams.

• Adopting a risk management approach • Imminence of Death amongst NHS Ayrshire and Arran Hospital In-patients • Developing a palliative care debrief • A Review of NHS Ayrshire and Arran Hospital Palliative Care Team TRAKCARE data 2021-2022. Other exciting news included the roll-out of the District Nursing Study Day Programme, starting in October, which will reach over 200 district nurses across Ayrshire. Study day objectives include: • Taking a Palliative Care Approach • What can the Ayrshire Hospice Offer? • Holistic Symptom Management • Palliative Care Emergencies • Planning ahead • Care in the last days of life The initial evaluation findings are extremely positive, with 100% of attendees confirming they would recommend the study day to a colleague. Recognition of this work has recently been acknowledged nationally by the Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care, with four abstracts being accepted for their 2022 Virtual Poster Parade Exhibition. NHS Ayrshire and Arran colleagues were also successful in submitting three abstracts. Details of all submissions are available to view on the Scottish Partnership of Palliative Care website: palliativecarescotland.org.uk

Titles of the accepted abstracts included: • Introducing the Triage Hub Meeting at The Ayrshire Hospice • Working as a truly multi-disciplinary team, including Catering and Housekeeping teams • Assessing the impact of decant from South Ayrshire to East Ayrshire on the demographics of patients admitted to the In-Patient Unit

The new Hospice development will provide an environment that supports contemporary care, dignity, and respect for the needs of patients and their families. It will also allow us to continue to support the people of Ayrshire & Arran affected by a life-limiting illness to remain in their own homes for as long as possible with palliative and end-of-life care. Making this momentous shift in the provision of end-of-life care for our community will cost money to achieve: the total cost of the project is projected to be £17 million. With £13.1 million secured, this incredible project has already raised 80% of the funds required; but we need your help to reach our target. The Ayrshire business community and beyond have supported The Ayrshire Hospice over the last 30 years. As we continue with our campaign to raise the remaining £3.9 million over the next 2 years, we again look to everyone in the community for their continued support.

and hospitality sector and I'm currently working on the Capital Campaign for Ayrshire Hospice. The support of local and national businesses is very important to us at Ayrshire Hospice and can bring a whole host of benefits to your organisation, including employee motivation and retention, commitment to corporate social responsibility and demonstrates that you are a compassionate employer who cares about the community. As Ayrshire’s largest charity, when we form relationships with businesses, we identify the unique synergies between their values and those of the Hospice to build mutually beneficial partnerships with measurable results. Over the next two years, we will create a facility that is truly fit for the future and able to meet the needs of our patients, their carers, and their families.

This is not merely an effort to construct a building; this is a transformational journey and long-term investment in our community to ensure that the growing need for this level of care is sustainably met for generations to come. Leaving just 1% of your estate to the Hospice makes a real difference to families affected by life-limiting illnesses. A gift in your Will is an incredible way to leave a lasting legacy for our patients and their families living with a life-limiting illness. If you would like to talk about including the Hospice in your Will or discuss any other legacy-related issues, please contact Kathryn Howell in our Fundraising Office at 01292 288488 or email kathryn.howell@ ayrshirehospice.org .

Gifts in Wills make a huge difference to Ayrshire Hospice patients and their families. One in three of our patients last year were cared for thanks to 38 kind supporters who left a gift in their Will to the organisation. By remembering the Ayrshire

Hospice in your Will, your legacy will be much more than just giving a donation. You’ll be giving care and support to our patients and their families for generations to come. It means that years from now, the Hospice will be here to help those in need of care and support when it matters most.

If other patients and families are apprehensive about coming to the Hospice, I’d say, don’t be - just put your arms out to the Hospice, because you’ll get the biggest cuddle they can give you . The Ayrshire Hospice has got to continue to care for patients. It’s one of these places that I never ever thought much about other than it was a kind, caring place. But to have experienced it, I can only say that we were lucky to get Karen into the Hospice. If everyone’s relative is given the same care as Karen, they will have reached the end of their life in peace and comfort. That’s what the Hospice offers - peace and comfort . Over the Christmas period the Hospice provides small gifts to patients’ children and grandchildren who visit their loved ones in the In-patient unit on Christmas day. I would also be delighted if you would join us at our Light

We will be joined by a variety of musical treats featuring choirs, groups and vocalists who will together offer a celebration of local voices and music. This will be a time of reflection and shared experience to recall all those who live on in our memories and thoughts. The Ayrshire Hospice Respite and Response team has added two new recruits to the team and The Article caught up with them to hear why they wanted to join the organisation. Helen Gilmour New starts proud to be part of the team!

Service in focus How Respite and Response works

By Wendy Short, Clinical Manager Living Well

The Ayrshire Hospice Respite and Response team provides high-quality specialist palliative care in the patient’s own home. The care provided is person-centered with the patient’s goals determining the plan of care. It supports people to have the choice to be cared for and to die at home. If it is what the patient wants, it will also aim to prevent them from being admitted to hospital.

Having spent many years working within the care sector in various different environments I have always aspired to work for the Ayrshire Hospice. My mum who was a registered nurse, worked in the Hospice and spoke fondly of the organisation, the environment and the service in its entirety. After being successful at the interview and starting some weeks ago as a full-time Care Assistant I have very quickly realised what a truly amazing service Respite and Response provides to patients and their families in the community and the team are very warm and welcoming. Working in the community as a care assistant is new to me and I can honestly say that providing care to someone in their Caroline Strachan I applied for a position as a Care Assistant with the Ayrshire Hospice Respite and Response community team as I was looking for a change from working in a care home setting, yet wanted to continue working in care. I feel passionate about being a care assistant and giving my best to care for and support both patients and their families. I was overwhelmed and so happy to be given the opportunity to work with the Respite and Response team, where I have been working since August this year. I am loving the job and working with the team who are all very supportive, friendly, and have made me feel very welcome. As a care assistant and one of the team, I feel privileged to be accepted into patients and family’s own homes to give care and support to all when needed most at a very hard time in their lives.

own home has been so awe-inspiring in terms of seeing the person comfortable in their home, having all the things they want and need by their side whilst receiving the care they need, where they want to be. The value in allowing carers some much- needed time out is such a precious resource. Families and carers can use this time to do what they wish in the knowledge that their loved one will be looked after in return. I am so happy and feel privileged to be part of such a brilliant team and look forward to my future within Respite and Response.

The service is committed to meeting and promoting the principles of: Dignity and Respect, Compassion, Being Included, Responsive Support and Wellbeing. During respite one of the experienced specialist palliative care assistants will visit and allow the carer to take time for themselves. Respite not only helps the carer feel less isolated but also the patient. The importance of wellbeing will be recognised, and the patient asked about what

matters to them, allowing them to continue as much as possible with their own interests. The team enjoy and are motivated to ‘think outside the box’ to assist patients to meet their own goals. Which could be anything from; assisting a patient to walk their dog, attend a football match, read the paper or celebrate an anniversary. A comfortable and dignified death in their own surroundings with

Respite and Response Team

all their loved ones with them is also an important goal that requires the care assistants to demonstrate specialist communication skills, care, and compassion. The Respite and Response Team work as part of the community nursing team and work very closely with the team of Specialist Palliative Care Nurses. These nurses are able to give advice and support to help patients achieve their goals.
