Hospice donates beds to Ukraine crisis

In total, the shipment saw over £500,000 of aid being transported and distributed to some of the areas most heavily impacted by the conflict in Ukraine.

Consequently, our Team reached out to a medical steering group facilitated by Baby Lifeline UK and the Edinburgh branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB Edinburgh). In late August, a team of volunteers from RE:ACT crisis response charity, AUGB Edinburgh, and Baby Lifeline packed 22 electronic specialist beds onto a truck bound for Kharkiv, Ukraine. Hospice is able to utilise NHS hospital beds in each of the patient rooms within the In-Patient Unit, which meant the organisation was able to consider how the beds from its traditional home could be utilised going forward. Although clinically suitable, the existing beds no longer met with the ethos of the new design at Racecourse Road where the greater ambition is to create a natural and homely environment for the patients and families that the Hospice cares for. Some have been collecting for the Ayrshire Hospice lottery for 25 years now and were presented with their long-service awards. The Ayrshire Hospice lottery began in 1994, and in that time has generated £17.6 million! The lottery now has over 13,500 members who are
our lottery collectors who go out in all weathers to collect for the Ayrshire Hospice. “It was a wonderful afternoon and a great opportunity to celebrate the team’s achievements and success of the Hospice lottery.” Those present were delighted to learn more about the future of our Hospice and watched a fly-through video of the new building presented by Ayrshire Hospice Chief Executive Tracy Flynn.

Flynn commented: “My team was delighted to be able to support this fantastic initiative and found it a profoundly moving experience assisting the team from Ukraine. The challenges being faced on a daily basis by healthcare professionals and citizens trying to deliver care in a war-torn environment are profound, and I am immensely proud that the Ayrshire Hospice has been able to assist.”

The Ayrshire Hospice was contacted recently by a kind- hearted supporter who offered to make bags that could be used in the In-Patient Unit. Janet Peacock reached out to offer her services to make some colourful bags that can be used to carry syringe drivers - which deliver medicine effectively to patients. The bags are modelled by Clinical Pharmacist, Fiona Knight and Care Assistant, Suzanne Craig in the IPU recently.
