Ash Wednesday is the traditional beginning of the season of Lent. It involves a worship service with times of confessional prayer and the imposition of ashes. Ashes have long been a symbol of repentance, sorrow, and sacrifice. We remember that we come from dust and to dust we shall return; yet this life journey is both known by God and redeemed by the love of Christ.
Palm Sunday is a day of drama and paradox - of a crowd gathering to shout "Hosanna" (Hebrew for "Save us"), wanting to crown Jesus as king, but who later will call for this same king to be crucified outside the city walls.
