We welcome our new Chief Executive By John Corrigan, Chair of Ayrshire Hospice Board
In 2004 a move to Australia and new opportunities saw Carla and her family leave the UK for warmer climes. Taking on the role of Executive Director Allied Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Carla quickly took on expanded responsibilities including the state wide Rehabilitation Service and developing the first Family Advisory Council in Australia. After a stint with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Carla took on the role of Project Director for the largest redevelopment of an active correctional facility in Australian history before moving to the exotic Far North and the Torres Strait. 2017 saw a move to the Middle East to be nearer to her late Mum in Ayrshire
The Hospice Board is delighted to introduce Carla MacEwan, the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ayrshire Hospice.
Carla, from Ayrshire, is a highly experienced healthcare professional with leadership experience in diverse roles in the public, private and third sectors in the UK, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Australia. Carla started her working life by helping in her Dad’s dental practice in Ayr. Moving to Glasgow University to take on a degree in Speech Pathology and Therapeutics saw her move to Inverness where she worked with people with special needs before returning to Ayrshire where she was involved
in the closure of Dunlop House and the opening of Arrol Park in 1991. In 1993 Carla had the opportunity to go to Wales to establish a new Speech and Language Therapy service for people with a learning disability, where she remained for the next 11 years, taking on new roles as Project Manager for the merger of two mental health services and General Manager across health and social care teams, alongside her substantive role managing the Speech and Language Therapy team.
and saw a return to her favourite beaches and hills around Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway. A keen kayaker and hill walker, often also found with her nose in a book, Carla firmly believes her role is to support and serve her community and is delighted to be joining such a strong and competent team at Ayrshire Hospice.
