Hear from the Hospice?
By Ron Swanson, Assistant Fundraising Manager
Over the past two months, the Ayrshire Hospice Fundraising team have enjoyed giving talks in the community about the services the hospice provides, fundraising activities and its future plans. Recently, the team have been warmly welcomed to speak at Kirkmichael Church Guild and Irvine Seagate Rotary Club. Whether you’re a member of a Church Guild, Rotary Club, Women’s Institute or another community group, the team would love to hear from you and be able to share how those in your local community can benefit from Ayrshire Hospice care and support.
By Tracy Flynn, Chief Executive Officer
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the June 2023 edition of The Article. I am thrilled to share with you the updates, developments and stories that have transpired since our last issue.
If you would be interested to arrange a visit from one of the hospice team, please call Ron on 01292 288488 or email donate@ayrshirehospice.org.
You may have noticed a new look for The Article, which has been given a fresh and contemporary makeover. In addition to the design, we are proud to announce that, for the first time ever, the newsletter will be printed on recycled paper. As an organisation, we are committed to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. We believe that every small step we take towards sustainability can make a significant impact, and printing on recycled paper is just one of the steps we are taking to build a sustainable future. In this issue you will also be able to read about the next step in our ambitious Capital Build Project, which saw us officially break ground on 5th April, marking the start of construction on the redevelopment of our home at Racecourse Road, Ayr. The Ayrshire Hospice is driven by the passion and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters, and we could not have come this far without your unwavering support. Quite simply, thank you. We hope that this newsletter provides you with insight into the work we do, and we look forward to your continued support as we strive to make a difference in the lives of those in our community across Ayrshire and Arran.

sub-structure is something that people can’t see, it is arguably one of the most crucial points of the project from which our new infrastructure will be built.” Andrew Baillie, Ayrshire Hospice Trustee and Chair of the Capital Project Governance Committee added: “Breaking Ground is the first major milestone in what will be an amazing new facility for the Hospice. Over the coming
months work will progress onto foundations, the superstructure and then the roof before moving into the interior fit-out. “It’s exciting to be not only creating a wonderful facility for patients, relatives and staff but helping to contribute to our sustainable future.”
By Lucy Glendinning, Senior Fundraiser
Everyone at the Ayrshire Hospice would like to say a great big thank you to six-and-a-half-year-old Edward for very kindly donating his pound to the Hospice. Any gift, no matter how big or small, is always appreciated and will help patients and families across Ayrshire and Arran receive our care. The Fundraising team were all extremely touched by the thought that someone so young would consider donating to the Hospice.
Thank you, Edward! You’re a very generous young man.

Wedding Favours By Caroline Lyon, Senior Fundraiser
Expanded Complementary Therapy services success
Volunteers supporting to shape our services
By Kirsty Cornwall, Quality Improvement Facilitator
The Ayrshire Hospice recently introduced its patient experience feedback to gain an increased understanding of their experiences with the Hospice. This valuable new service is run by volunteers who donate their time to learn more about the experiences that patients and their families have of hospice care and how that feedback can be used to help shape future care. Volunteers Lorraine Stobbie and Corinne Amos have been working with the Hospice since January 2023, helping to drive the focus on co-production with patients and families. Co-production is all about working with people to ensure their
views are represented and considered when decisions are being made about the future of the Hospice; whether that’s asking for input on our clinical strategy, the care patients receive, or the food on the menu.
LORRAINE AND CORINNE - PATIENT EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERS.
The Ayrshire Hospice offer a wide range of Complementary Therapy for people within our In- Patient Unit or at home and the Hospice is extremely proud of the early success of its recently increased therapy offering to patients.
Wedding Favours have been given to guests since the 16th century when a small gift from a newlywed couple was believed to bring good luck.
The volunteer Patient Experience team contacts patients within the In-Patient Unit and in the community to gain an understanding of their experience with the Hospice. An example of actionable feedback that has been implemented into practice has been providing patients with a timeframe as to when the community team are due to visit as several responses mentioned this would be helpful.
Corinne qualified as a nurse in 1977 and still holds an active NMC registration, having spent some of her career working at a senior level in the Middle East. Lorraine is a retired Head Teacher of a local specialist school for children and young people with complex additional support needs and has extensive experience working with parents and carers during difficult times.

The new twilight service, which began in October last year, has been warmly welcomed by patients in the In-Patient Unit who have said it has helped improve their sleep at night as they feel more relaxed going to bed. These therapies are provided free of charge by a team of three professional therapists who hold recognised national qualifications. The team of Christine McClean, Caitlyn Cunningham and Gabriel Jordan create an individual therapy programme specifically tailored to the patient. From initial feedback over 80% of patients found a benefit to their well-being, half experienced a positive impact for pain and 70% had a better night’s sleep after their evening therapy session. Currently, the extended service runs three nights a week to people within the In-Patient Unit where it is applied alongside and in support of conventional medical methods of care. The holistic approach of the sessions aims to ease the emotional, mental and physical effects that illness can have on people and those they love.

The pop-up featured outfits for babies and children, tea cosies, cushions, soft toys and much more. The Ayrshire Hospice recently took delivery of two new specialised Rea wheelchairs thanks to the efforts of one of their Ladies Lunch Clubs. The Ladies Lunch (South Group), who meet at the Horizon Hotel in Ayr once a month, purchased two new specialised wheelchairs that provide extra postural support and comfort to support patients with symptoms that may include pain, swollen limbs, fatigue and a lack of good sitting balance. Heather Hardie, Ayrshire Hospice Lead Practitioner Community and Living Well said: “I want to thank the Ladies Lunch Club for purchasing these chairs for use in the Hospice, they’ll be a massive benefit to our patients. “These chairs can have a considerable benefit for someone living with a condition such as MND who may otherwise be restricted to a bed or a recliner chair. They allow people to get outside, to shops and to family events when they otherwise would not be able to.” Susan Kendall, Ladies Lunch Club (South Group), Committee Chair, added: “When we heard that two Rea wheelchairs were on the Hospice wish list we were pleased to be able to fund them - this is the

Remembering Jean
By Claire Stuart-Paulin, Senior Fundraiser
The fundraising team were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of their long- term supporters, the lovely Jean Currie. Jean was a few months short of her 90th birthday when she passed in September last year, but her age never held her back from making the most of life or supporting the Hospice. Daughter Jane and sister-in-law, Wilma, came into the fundraising office and shared treasured memories of Jean with fundraisers Claire and Mackenzie. Jean started supporting the Hospice nearly 30 years ago when she joined the Dunlop Friends Group and for close to 20 years she worked in the Hospice shop in Kilmarnock every Thursday,
never missing a day as she loved it so much. Despite having to retire from the shop due to her mobility issues, Jean soon found a new way to give. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles, the more colourful the better, with her favourites being of animals, birds and - being a farmer all her days - farm life images. She would spend hours piecing them all together before having them framed and taking them to local craft fairs and cafés to sell – with every penny donated to the Hospice. When Jean wasn’t doing her puzzles, she was happiest buzzing around Stewarton on her mobility scooter. Never passing anyone without giving them a smile and a heartfelt good morning, she was
a well-known face at the local supermarket and befriended many pupils of the local school, just by being the warm, friendly, sociable person she was. Her funeral was packed out the door of her church by the many people who will miss her. A collection in her memory raised £1,600 - showing that everyone who knew her, knew how much the Hospice meant to her.

A Toast to the Bard
Ayrshire Hospice has a new Children and Young Person’s Service
By Laura Somerville, Lead Practitioner Patient and Family Care team
Over 150 guests joined us at our Burns Supper in January and enjoyed a top-class evening of food and entertainment at the Brig o’ Doon House Hotel, raising an incredible £15,000. Celebrating Scotland’s National Bard, we welcomed Peter Brown to provide the ‘Toast to the Lassies’, and Deborah Leslie provided an able reply. Young pupils from Alloway Primary; Nicole Steel
and Zahra Taylor, together with Aaron Ritchie and Frazer Snedden from Doonfoot Primary, were a highlight of the evening as they performed poems and addressed the haggis.
The service offers those aged from 5 to 18 and living in Ayrshire and Arran access to qualified counsellor, Cheryl Gallagher. Counselling can help children be more aware of their emotions around illness and loss, recognise and manage strong feelings and develop coping skills, while talking about and understanding grief. This can lead to reduced distress and improved ability to cope, skills that children and young

people can take forward into other situations in life. Using a variety of skills and resources, such as talking therapy, drawing and working through issues via play, there are a number of resources available to help children make sense of loss and death. As the Children & Young Persons Practitioner, Cheryl supports children where they have lost a grandparent, friend or where a parent has a diagnosis. She can also work alongside parents and caregivers to offer resources to help explain to children about a diagnosis or prognosis. Cheryl is able to see children at home, or in school, both individually and in small groups. If a child wishes for a family member or trusted adult to be present during the first introductory session, this can be arranged. If you know a child or young person who may benefit from this service, please contact our Hospice Triage Team on 01292 269200

Celebration Tree continues growing...
This equipment – and more – will help us make every day matter for our patients at the Ayrshire Hospice. Although we think of them as essential features, they are unfortunately not cheap to buy. It costs around £30,000 to completely equip just one room – which is why we’re asking for help. You can kindly donate by scanning the QR code above, calling the Fundraising Office on 01292 288 488 , or visiting our website at ayrshirehospice.org
The remaining £3.2 million to complete the build will ensure the Hospice will be fit for the next 30 years and beyond. To fully equip all 12 of our single-patient bedrooms, we still need: Patient comfort kits, containing cosy nightwear, brand new towels, and luxury yet gentle bath and shower gels (perfect for patients with sore, sensitive skin) - £28.90 per set

“I can’t believe how much we did”
By Graeme Strawhorn, Assistant Fundraising Manager
For Janice Hartley, the last 34 years with the Ayrshire Hospice have been about friendship.
She says, “My 30 years with Kilwinning Friends have been brilliant; there’s been many laughs and many tears. Friendships for me have been a true highlight; friends have come and gone along the way but I will always have the wonderful memories of all the amazing things we did for the Hospice; I can’t believe how much we did.” Originally from Yorkshire, Janice moved with her family to Kilwinning, Ayrshire in 1975 when her husband started a new job at Hunterston and she would return to primary teaching in 1989 at Hayocks Primary in Stevenston. It was during those initial years in Ayrshire that Janice would become involved in the work of Malcolm Sargent House in Prestwick and, it was here that she would become acquainted with Evelyn Boyd - they would go on to become close friends. Kilwinning Friends Group had been working hard throughout the late 1980’s to help with fundraising toward a new hospice in Ayrshire when Janice, in 1988 accepted an invitation from another wonderful lady, who would also become a close friend, Ray Wilson. Janice first met Ray at one of the Kilwinning Friends’ coffee morning events and shortly after joining, she became secretary.
Meanwhile, through her new friendship with Evelyn, Janice was invited to be part of the Hospice Board of Trustees, at that time known as the Hospice’s Management Council. Acting as the main contact and convenor of all the Friends Groups and supporting the work of the Fundraising Team, Janice also supported other sub-groups and committees including Education. There were many highlights throughout Janice’s time with the Hospice Board and as part of Kilwinning Friends. Janice fondly remembers the excitement of being invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at the Palace of Holyrood in Edinburgh along with fellow Kilwinning Friends members; Ray and Marita Kenyon. The trio were nominated by someone in Kilwinning for their service to the hospice movement and their dedicated efforts to the Ayrshire Hospice. She also fondly spoke of meeting a young Prince Edward at a fundraising event at the then Caledonian Hotel, Ayr (now The Mercure, Ayr).
So, what’s next for Janice?
March 2020 saw the world change dramatically when communities across the world were put into lockdown as the COVID-19 pandemic halted our way of life. The pandemic ultimately would see many of their members decide to call it a day for the safety of their health. In addition, Janice and many others had been part of Kilwinning Friends since the late eighties, some having volunteered with the group for over 36 years. “For the new team who are thankfully keeping the group going; Think about why you do it, enjoy it. And, know what you are doing is truly helping many throughout Ayrshire and you are truly supporting such a wonderful cause.”
She has lots planned with her husband and spending time with her two wonderful grandchildren. But, it is very much not the end of Janice’s involvement with the Hospice. She’s always keen to keep up with the work of the charity and is a regular attendee of the Hospice Annual General Meeting where she never fails to come up with a challenging question or two! She loves to keep up to date and is so excited about the Capital Project, building a hospice fit for the future. Janice finished ‘I have so much admiration for the wonderful people at Ayrshire Hospice and the outstanding care they provide. Both patients and their families are
well cared for. I know this having many friends and families who have been touched by the services they provide. The Hospice make wishes come true in the most difficult of times and the support they have given to so many has been truly remarkable. It’s been great to contribute to that over my time supporting the Hospice and for the times ahead too.’ “I’ll remember brilliant teamwork, great friends and everyone’s husbands always being roped in to muck in and make any fundraising task, activity or event, a success!”
In giving her time to the Ayrshire Hospice in a variety of ways such as via the Kilwinning Friends Group and as a Trustee of the organisation, the companionship with other supporters will be what she remembers most fondly.
