The Ayrshire Hospice recently took delivery of two new specialised Rea wheelchairs thanks to the efforts of one of their Ladies Lunch Clubs. The Ladies Lunch (South Group), who meet at the Horizon Hotel in Ayr once a month, purchased two new specialised wheelchairs that provide extra postural support and comfort to support patients with symptoms that may include pain, swollen limbs, fatigue and a lack of good sitting balance. Heather Hardie, Ayrshire Hospice Lead Practitioner Community and Living Well said: “I want to thank the Ladies Lunch Club for purchasing these chairs for use in the Hospice, they’ll be a massive benefit to our patients. “These chairs can have a considerable benefit for someone living with a condition such as MND who may otherwise be restricted to a bed or a recliner chair. They allow people to get outside, to shops and to family events when they otherwise would not be able to.” Susan Kendall, Ladies Lunch Club (South Group), Committee Chair, added: “When we heard that two Rea wheelchairs were on the Hospice wish list we were pleased to be able to fund them - this is the

Remembering Jean
By Claire Stuart-Paulin, Senior Fundraiser
The fundraising team were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of their long- term supporters, the lovely Jean Currie. Jean was a few months short of her 90th birthday when she passed in September last year, but her age never held her back from making the most of life or supporting the Hospice. Daughter Jane and sister-in-law, Wilma, came into the fundraising office and shared treasured memories of Jean with fundraisers Claire and Mackenzie. Jean started supporting the Hospice nearly 30 years ago when she joined the Dunlop Friends Group and for close to 20 years she worked in the Hospice shop in Kilmarnock every Thursday,
never missing a day as she loved it so much. Despite having to retire from the shop due to her mobility issues, Jean soon found a new way to give. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles, the more colourful the better, with her favourites being of animals, birds and - being a farmer all her days - farm life images. She would spend hours piecing them all together before having them framed and taking them to local craft fairs and cafés to sell – with every penny donated to the Hospice. When Jean wasn’t doing her puzzles, she was happiest buzzing around Stewarton on her mobility scooter. Never passing anyone without giving them a smile and a heartfelt good morning, she was
a well-known face at the local supermarket and befriended many pupils of the local school, just by being the warm, friendly, sociable person she was. Her funeral was packed out the door of her church by the many people who will miss her. A collection in her memory raised £1,600 - showing that everyone who knew her, knew how much the Hospice meant to her.
reason the club exists, to help with extras which will support patients and their families.”
