YEAR 9 ELECTIVES

MEDIA ARTS Building on the skills learned in Year 8 Media and employing an enhanced knowledge of communication strategies and persuasive techniques applied by the media, students work to respond to different briefs, exploring how communication strategies are applied to sell products and services through the media. Students then explore how Australian Identity is represented in film. They begin by comparing the cinematic techniques in provided films. In small groups, plan and create a short film directed at a specific audience. Students must utilise film making techniques on both creative and technical levels, evidencing proper planning and execution of ideas. VISUAL ART Art is a universal language of expression that allows students to communicate ideas beyond words. In this elective, students experiment with different materials and techniques to develop their personal artistic style. They critically analyse the work of artists from diverse cultures and historical contexts, using this understanding to inform their own creative decisions. Visual Design focuses on both digital and manual design methods, following the Design Cycle (research, ideation, evaluation, and presentation). Students develop a folio showcasing their artistic growth, drawing skills, and ability to justify their design choices. DANCE/DRAMA Students explore choreography and performance, developing movement sequences that communicate themes, stories, or ideas. They refine their technical skills across various dance styles and have the opportunity to perform in a showcase. Students also analyse professional dance pieces, identifying how movement, production elements, and choreographic devices contribute to expressive intention. In Drama, students work collaboratively to adapt scripts, design sets, and create ensemble performances. Through their roles as actors, directors, and stage managers, students enhance their communication, teamwork, and performance skills.

The Year 9 elective program empowers students with agency over their learning, allowing them to pursue subjects aligned with their interests, talents, and future aspirations. Through a diverse range of subjects, students cultivate creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while engaging in hands-on, inquiry-based learning. The elective curriculum is designed to foster independence, self-motivation, and a deeper understanding of various disciplines, preparing students for senior studies and beyond.
