YEAR 9 SUBJECT CHARGES

FOOD STUDIES

Students expand their culinary skills and deepen their understanding of food production, nutrition, and sustainability. They explore global cuisines, experimenting with diverse cooking techniques and ingredients. Ethical food production and sustainability are key areas of study, with students discussing topics such as food waste and animal welfare. Practical learning is emphasised through hands-on cooking experiences, including real-life ‘mystery box’ challenges that encourage creativity and problem-solving in the kitchen. Students also engage in sensory analysis to critically evaluate their dishes and refine their cooking techniques. APPLIED COMPUTING Students explore the world of information and software technology. They begin by exploring how web applications function and secure information. Students develop programming skills through a number of individual and group tasks over a range of different projects (with a focus on exploring a range of different programming languages). Throughout these projects students’ develop knowledge and understanding, confidence and creativity in analysing, designing and evaluating information and software technology solutions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the biggest growth areas in technology today. Students explore emerging trends and current research in AI to examine how it impacts our daily lives. They learn the skills to be able to create, program and manipulate AI and apply this knowledge to plan their own response to a given design problem. PRODUCT DESIGN Students take a hands-on approach to design and production, writing their own design briefs and applying diagnostic thinking to solve real-world challenges. They use isometric and computer- aided design (CAD) drawings, conduct risk assessments, and develop detailed production plans. Students gain experience working with various materials such as wood, metal, and plastics, refining their craftsmanship and technical skills. The iterative design process encourages students to test, modify, and improve their products, culminating in the development of a folio that documents their creative journey from concept to completion.
