Lesson: People and nations want to be great. The trouble comes when they want to be great in ways which are contrary to God’s will. It would be interesting to know just how people and nations can be great in the sight of God. I brought a piece of paper this morning, which I believe will tell us how to be great. The first word we see is “ GREAT.” If we will open the paper, we shall see how people and na tions can be great. I first notice the word “ RIGHTEOUS NESS.” To be righteous means to be just, honest and holy. Only people who are saved by faith in Christ can be righteous in the day in which we live. The next four words are, “ TRUE JUDGMENT EXALTETH NATIONS.” These words remind us of what the prophet Zechariah once said to the peo ple of Israel. “ These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judg ment of truth and peace in your gates: And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord” (Zech. 8:16. 17). The reason why people and nations are not great today is the same as in the days of Zechariah—they refuse to obey God’s voice, for we read, “ Thus speak- eth the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. But they re fused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear” (Zech. 7:9-11).
