REUSABLE ABSORBENT PRODUCTS

Menstrual products – pads

Relevant tests • POA/DF1 – Adhesivity of pads and wings • POA/DF4 – Feminine hygiene / multiple acquisition time without pressure • POA/DF6 – Feminine hygiene / total retentionof pads after centrifuge • POA/DF7-DF8 – Feminine hygiene / simulation test on mannequins (standing, sitting) • POA/DF9 – Feminine hygiene / run-off efficiency • Walking test

Measure the performance of feminine hygiene products, focusing on product attributes, such as: • Fast absorption of menstrual fluid without leakage (run-off, acquisition time, simulation tests on mannequins) • Comfort, fitness and integrity (moisture measurement, adhesivity, core integrity) Application range Tests can be conducted on fluff pads (including maternity pads), ultra thin products, as well as panty liners.

Menstrual products tampons

Measure performances of internal menstrual products, such as tampons, to verify that absorption meets expectations and prevents any risk linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Other measurements focus on tampon removal efficacy and risk of discomfort.

Application range • Digital tampons • Tampons with an applicator (classic, compact) Relevant tests • SP 350.1: Tampons absorbency syngina method (internal reference: DTF2) • DFT1: Determination of the applicator expulsion capacity

• DFT3: Free absorption of a tampon • DFT4: Tampon stability expertise (compression, multiple immersions) • DFT5: Compression resistance of a tampon

• DFT6: Cord strength of a tampon • DFT8: Fiber loss measurement

Baby diapers and pants

On top of the forever mandatory absorbency expectations, parents are increasingly concerned about their babies’ comfort during day and night. Our laboratory is renowned for its performance methods that highlight leakage and dermal issues while proposing cutting-edge methods for assesing other product features (breathability, closing system, softness, ...)

Application range Tests can be conducted on open diapers, pants and premature products. Relevant tests DRYNESS PERFORMANCE: • ABL-R: Absorption before leakage – return • ASH-R: Anarewet skin hydratation – return OTHER PERFORMANCE TESTS: • C52/C54/C55b: Closure system efficiency • Multiple acquisition time under controlled pressure (Anarewet Plus)

• RESP: Breathability of a finished product • SWAP Tests (Substitution Works and Performance)

• Expert sensory evaluation • Digital softness analysis

• Walking tests (Sagging effect / core integrity) • Product characteristics (Dimension and weights, list of layers, retention capacity, Super Absorbent Powder (SAP), content etc.)

Incontinence products

Nowadays, incontinence absorbent products are no longer produced to reach high loads of absorbency only. They are refined to reach users expectations while meeting sustainability goals (e.g. limiting absorbent material).

SGS has been at the forefront of developments to respond those eco-design considerations, proposing simulation testing methods that take the product design and features into account for the performance evaluation. Application range Testing solutions are applied to the full-range of adult incontinence (from light to heavy flow): • Women and men products • Pads, brief, pants and pouches Relevant tests • ABLb: Absorption before leakage – heavy incontinence • ABLc: Absorption before leakage – medium incontinence

• ABLd: Absorption bbefore Leakage – light incontinence • ASH: Anarewet skin hydration – adult hygiene • Multiple acquisition time through anarewet plus system • SWAP tests (Substitution Works And Performance) • NWSP 354.0: Absorption before leakage using an adult mannequin • C52 / C52B / C55 – Closure system efficiency • Walking tests (Sagging effect / core integrity)

• Digital softness analysis • Expert sensory evaluation

• Product characteristics (Dimension and weights, list of layers, retention capacity, Super Absorbent Powder (SAP) content etc.) • ISO 11948 - Urine absorbing - aids - Part1 - whole product testing

Tissue paper

Tissue paper products are often considered as simple products, however a lot of product research and development work is undertaken to meet consumer and sustainability expectations. Each characteristic is interlinked and influences its performances (like resistance, absorption, softness). We offer a range of methods, derived / improved from current test standards.

Twice a year our laboratory completes inter-laboratory test sessions to confirm the accuracy of our measurements. Microbiological and chemical analyses (including food contact for kitchen rolls) can be conducted within our network of laboratories. Application range • Toilet paper: kitchen rolls, tissues and other tissue-based papers Relevant tests THESE INTERNAL METHODS ARE DERIVED FROM ISO 12625: • POA/C0 – Sampling and conditioning of tissue paper products

• POA/A2b – Dimensions of tissue paper products • POA/B – Basis weight • POA/A2 – Thickness of tissue paper products • POA/A4 – Fibre composition • POA/C3 – Tensile strength of tissue paper products • POA/C31 – Pre-cut efficiency • POA/DO2 – Ball burst test • POA/C33 – Absorption of tissue paper • POA/C34 – Dispersion time of a toilet paper • POA/C35 – Colour / brightness measurement

Cotton

Measure and determine characteristics of cotton products, demonstrate compliance to standards and pharmacopoeia, and show products abilities in terms of both during use.

Comparison tests can be provided. Mini panel tests on product softness, flexibility, thickness and other criteria can also be arranged. Microbiological and chemical testing can be conducted within our network of laboratories. Application range Products tested include cotton, cotton pads, cotton swabs and wet cotton pads. Relevant tests PERFORMANCE TESTS:

• POA/DC5b – Cotton linting of pads • POA/DC8 – Cotton swab tearing off testpads • POA/DC9 – Cotton swab flexibility of the stick • POA/DC10 – Cotton Immersion time and total absorption • POA/DEMAQ – Make up removal power of cotton pads • POA/Panelc – Expert panel on cotton products

CHARACTERISTIC DETERMINATIONS: • POA/A1 – Weight determination • POA/A2 – Dimensions • POA/A4 – Fibrous determination • POA/A5 – Cotton water loss test • POA/DC11 – pH

• POA/DC1 – Cotton precut efficiency • POA/DC2 – Cotton tensile strength

• POA/DC3 – Cotton lotion absorption of pads • POA/DC4 – Cotton ball burst test on pads
