THE DCM HOLLINGTON TRUST

The Hollington Club has been providing services to the local community for over 120 years. It supports vulnerable young people in an area which includes a high number of unemployed and single parent families. Roger Walker, Hollington’s Chairman, outlines below the plans to reopen the Club. There are two charitable companies involved with the Hollington Club: the DCM Hollington Trust owns the Club premises and holds the endowment that assists in providing funds for the Hollington Club. The Club was founded at the end of the 19th century as the College Mission and set up as a separate company a few years ago to facilitate funding. In normal times, the Club committee manages the day-to-day running of the premises for the local ‘The Hollington Youth Club aims to build positive relationships in a safe environment; to encourage learning and development through activities and experiences.’

As well as the Club’s premises, the Trust owns a portfolio of investments built up from the College Mission collections and from OA donations and legacies, managed by Peter Lyon (53–61), working alongside Roger Walker. This has enabled it to continue grants to the Club. The endowment has been shrinking markedly over the last few years, however, and the income generated has had to be supplemented with regular injections of capital. It has become clear that the Trust will soon be unable to make sufficient grants to keep the Club afloat.

It is envisaged that a new youth club/community centre will be built on the ground floor, with residential apartments above, including ‘affordable housing’. This will ensure the ongoing running of the centre by the Club, while the Trust will retain the freehold and gain a capital sum to recapitalise the depleted funds. A developer has been appointed, and it is hoped that the building works, subject to planning permission, will be completed by late 2019 or early 2020. The committee, which usually meets three times a year, is meeting more often whilst the redevelopment is under way and is actively looking for younger members.
