Alleyn Club Yearbook 114th Issue

Our AGM followed quickly in the wake of the dinner and this year was held on Saturday 9 February. Because of the number of lunches and dinners throughout the year, we were – for the first time – entertaining our members and guests in the James Caird Hall, in which the College kindly allowed us to have a buffet lunch to kick off our 35th year in some style. Last year we entertained 30 for lunch, our Admiral (The Master) presented Anthony Lindley with the Archie Shaw Cup for his contribution to the society over many years. Starting as a boy on the Boys’ Sail Training Week, Anthony has recently been Main Trim for the Arrow Trophy, Skipper on the Boys’ Week last year and has sailed his father’s concrete barge around the UK coast, which is no mean feat. The David Emms plate was awarded to Peter Fosdike. Peter has been part of the society since first stepping aboard a yacht as a boy at College. He has only missed two years in total and is a valued member of the society.

The BSTW in 2018 was a successful week, and we were able to introduce two new skippers – Reg Kheraj and Anthony Lindley, with Jo and dog Inky. Reg has super yacht experience and did his formative training at UKSA after leaving the College. Both have promised to come back for more. The BSTW in 2019 will be from 14 to 19 July, with the last night supper on 18 July at the Island Sailing Club, Cowes. This year we are going all out for six chartered yachts, which will be a first and will mean that we can take 24 boys from College, plus two more on the privately owned yacht Ruby , skippered by Nigel Barnwell and first crew mate Isobel. As already mentioned, we won silverware once again at the Arrow Trophy; it is a unique achievement for an Alleynian club or society. Under the DC banner the society has been running the regatta for the past three years, led by Richard Sainsbury (Chair), Alastair Capon (Hon. Sec.) and Simon Brown (Treasurer).

Shrewsbury, who will be taking over, have a hard act to follow.

It is also the society’s intention to take two yachts across to Cherbourg and round the corner to St Vaast. This is in celebration of the ASS rallies that took place during the late 1980s and 90s, when a whole fleet of privately owned yachts would cross the Channel to sample various wines and food and give younger members the opportunity to sail off-shore. We are hoping that we will be weighing anchor either in mid-May or June. My thanks, as ever, to the Commodore and committee who allow me to carry on cajoling, asking for support, sending out missives as and when. Thanks also to our Admiral and Harry Willetts for their continued support, and to the Alleyn Club and Friends of Dulwich without whose continued funding we would not be able to carry on our core activity.

Hon. Sec. Notes 2018 Anthony Frankford (62–69)
