Introduce Kids to Civil Engineering Engineers Week 2013 - Celebrate Awesome!

ASCE will proudly celebrate National Engineers Week Feb 17-23, 2013! During this high-profile celebrationASCE members will join with engi- neers from all disciplines to showcase their love of engi- neering and build awareness about the vast contribution engineers make to our every- day quality of life. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Awe- some”. Be a part of an ASCE tradition that is turning kids on to the awesome possibili- ties of civil engineering! A Message from NCEES This year, the National Coun- cil of Examiners for Engi- neering and Surveying, or NCEES, is excited to cel- ebrate the awesome contribu- tions engineers make to our world by co-chairing the 2013 Engineers Week, along with Lockheed Martin. This year’s Engineers Week

theme—CelebrateAwesome— is a call to celebrate the people in the profession and all they do. Engineers innovate. They create. They solve problems. They work together to make the world better. Engineers are key to our health, safety, and happiness. And when kids and youth get to experience it first-hand, they discover for themselves how amazing engineering is. Going forward, this is go- ing to be even more true, as engineers develop solutions to such problems as food se- curity, energy sustainability, infrastructure, and global climate change. That’s why the National Engineers Week Foundation – and its part- ners like NCEES and Lock- heed Martin – are dedicated to attracting and cultivat- ing the next generation of engineers. n

F

ounded by NSPE in 1951, EWeek (February 17– 23, 2013) is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well- educated future engineering workforce by increasing un- derstanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. In the United States, the third full week of February is National Engineers Week. Today, Eweek is observed by a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cul- tural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies. The purpose of Na- tional Engineers Week is to call attention to the contributions to society that engineers make. It is also a time for engineers to emphasize the importance of learning math, science, and technical skills Dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers’ posi-

tive contributions to quality of life, National Engineering Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers, and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science, and tech- nology literacy, and motivates youth, to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a di- verse and vigorous engineering workforce. Each year, EWeek reaches thousands of schools, businesses, and community groups across the U.S. The cel- ebration of National Engineers Week was started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers in conjunction with President George Washington’s birthday. President Washington is considered as the nation’s first engineer, notably for his survey work. Engineers have helped build our nation since it’s founding.

Our first president, George Washington, conducted engi- neering activities as a soldier and as a young man, surveying and mapping wilderness territo- ries. Today, engineers are essen- tial for building and maintain- ing the systems that protect our health and safety, restore and protect our environment, make our factories run and contribute to our economic future Yet, for all these contribu- tions toward building a modern world, there are many people who are not aware of what the more than 1.6 million engineers in this country do. Engineers Week is a strong venue to in- form our citizens of the value of engineers, celebrate engineer- ing technology and innovation and cultivate interest in math, science and engineering among the nation’s youth - tomorrow’s work force. n
