MEMORIES OF HALLOWEENS PAST WHEN CANDY MATTERED MOST Some of my fondest memories of Halloween are with my two sons, Ryan even participated a couple times. It’s a great way for the community to come together and enjoy this fun holiday.

and then heading out the door once the sun set. We always hit the houses that gave full-sized candy bars and wouldn’t come back home until our pillowcases were almost too heavy to carry. This was before there was a time limit on trick-or- treating like there is today. My siblings and I would hit every single house, walking blocks and blocks, and we always had a blast. As a kid, I don’t remember being too concerned about costumes; my focus was mainly on the candy. Similarly, when my own kids went trick-or-treating, they felt very much the same. But as a dad, one of the things I enjoyed most was seeing the costumes my wife made for Ryan and Eric. She was always really creative with them; one year she made one of them into a Tootsie Roll and went all out with decorating it. My kids always looked fantastic when they went out on Halloween night, while my siblings and I never really did the whole dress-up thing. Today, now that my kids are older and grown, my wife and I really enjoy giving out treats to the neighborhood kids who come to our door on Halloween night. –John Reid
and Eric, when they were younger. Every Halloween, my wife and I would get home as early as possible, get the kids ready, and head outside to go trick- or-treating. A lot of our trick-or-treating adventures took place on the “Haunted Trail” set up each year close to where we lived. While its name gives it a spooky vibe, the trail is actually the opposite: a paved walkway in the woods where local businesses set up booths and tables and hand out treats to the kids. My kids, as well as most of the kids in the neighborhood, were always excited to walk down the trail and fill up their candy bags. The Haunted Trail was also a good chance for parents to take their younger kids out and not have to worry about traffic. Instead of the little ones running from house to house and across streets, they had this safe but exciting alternative. I remember whenever my wife and I took Ryan and Eric there, we always had a really good time. We mostly met up with a group of other families who lived down our block. Our kids were relatively all the same age, and it was really fun to watch them get together, check out everyone’s costumes, and then set off to hit the trail. Watching how much Ryan and Eric enjoyed trick-or-treating at Halloween reminds me of when I used to go trick-or-treating as a kid. I have a lot of brothers and sisters, and every Halloween, we would go out together. I remember getting ready with my siblings

NO. 3: ‘GHOSTBUSTERS’
I had been working in a factory for 10 years and was contemplating a change. I was also laid off from my job around the same time. As it turned out, Reid & Pederson was doing a sewer repair at my dad’s house, and my family and I were living there with him at the time. Reid & Pederson just so happened to have an ad out looking for a sewer technician. I was impressed with the work they did at my dad’s house and was interested in learning more about the job. So, I responded to the ad, applied, and here I am. I like the fact that I get to work independently; I know that John and Kevin trust me to get the job done. They’ve been good to me and it’s easy to work and communicate with them. I’ve really learned a lot from them over the years. On the customer side, I love solving problems by answering customers’ questions and making sure each and every one of them is happy before I leave. Every day is different and every customer is different, but I like meeting new people, and I love that aspect of my job. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
“Who you gonna call” to be high on this list? The 1984 spectral classic, “Ghostbusters.” While this may be more of an action-comedy, plenty of scares and creepy imagery still get a jump out of first-time watchers young and old alike. If you’re looking for a lighthearted movie night that still captures a Halloween feel, “Ghostbusters” is a great choice.
NO. 2: ‘CORALINE’
Few authors weave creepiness with coming-of-age stories together better than Neil Gaiman, and his 2009 film “Coraline” proves just that. Based on Gaiman’s book of the same name, director Henry Selick uses his signature stop-motion animation style to bring the script to life. While young children may find the doll-like imagery too unsettling, this is a great introductory thriller for preteens. Yes, a Scooby-Doo movie is at the top of this list — and it deserves to be. As the feature-length debut of Scooby, Shaggy, and the rest of the Mystery Gang, this 1998 film doesn’t pull any punches. While the hand-drawn animation and slapstick high jinks of the original Hanna- Barbera cartoon are all there, make no mistake: There are some creepy moments in this movie. Between scary zombie elements and a spooky Voodoo doll scene, this is the perfect film to get your kids into the Halloween spirit. NO. 1: ‘SCOOBY-DOO ON ZOMBIE ISLAND’

1. In a large saucepan, bring 1 inch of water to a boil. 2. Place a large, heatproof mixing bowl on top of saucepan so that no steam can escape. Place melting chocolate in mixing bowl and double boil until melted. 3. Dip half of each piece of fruit in chocolate before transferring to a parchment-lined baking sheet to rest. 4. Let cool for 10 minutes until chocolate solidifies. 5. Place in school lunches, serve at parties, and indulge in a few for yourself.

JUST IN T IME FOR HALLOWEEN NO-CARVE PUMPKIN DESIGNS!
NOTHING BUT NET You can create eerie pumpkins using fishnet stockings. Spray-paint your pumpkin if desired — just make sure the design of the stockings will stand out. Once the paint is dry, cut the legs off the stockings, slide the pumpkin inside, remove the extra fabric around the stem, and use hot glue to secure it. COLORFUL PAINT Painting your Halloween pumpkins gives everyone a chance to participate. Be creative by using different designs, cutouts for silhouettes, drip paint to create a marble design, or nail polish and water to give white pumpkins a unique and vibrant look. A SPOOKY MONSTER By adding a witch hat, wrapping a pumpkin in cheesecloth, attaching spider legs, or tying on a vampire cape, you can create a pumpkin version of the most popular Halloween monsters. Along with these accessories, you can also use paint, construction paper, and other craft materials to add the details that will make your creation pop!

but digging through the inside of a pumpkin is not something everyone enjoys. If you aren’t keen on cutting open a pumpkin, here are a few no-carve ideas you can try this Halloween!
HAUNTED HOUSE Take a few pumpkins, stack them on top of each other, and create a spooky pumpkin haunted
house! Then, use paint, balsa wood sheets, and hot glue to create silhouettes, ghosts, windows, and doors for a haunting effect!
CREATIVE WITH STRING Use cotton twine and hot glue to create a web-like design on the surface of your pumpkin. Don’t forget to add a few plastic spiders! You can also use string art to create ghostly words or images. Lay out your design with small pegs or nails and wrap the string around them to reach your desired effect.
