LENDING A HAND Our Second Service Trip to Guatemala

How is your summer? My family and I are enjoying the sunny weather and being outside! This time of year, there’s not much that makes me happier than getting outside to fish, camp, and enjoy nature. Later in the summer, we’re going to the Bear Lake area for a family reunion. That’s where my father grew up, and his family lived there for many years, so it has special meaning to us. We’re getting together with my parents, brothers, sisters, and their families for a camping weekend, and I’m looking forward to spending some time in a beautiful place with people I love. We try to get together at least once a year, but it’s amazing how quickly time passes between visits. In March, I took my second service trip to Guatemala to provide dental care to the communities there. This year, my wife, Jen, and my two youngest sons joined me, and just as I did on my first trip, they fell in love with the beautiful country, the warm people, and the immeasurable gratification that comes from helping others. They also found a renewed appreciation for many of the luxuries we have at home, including access to dental and health care. Many of the people we served on the trip don’t have the same things we do, and it’s eye-opening (and a good reminder) to realize we’re very fortunate to have what we have. This year, I was able to work with both my boys as I saw patients, and I noticed the joy they found in helping others. We had a really wonderful time, and I hope to make this trip a tradition. For my kids, I hope their time in Guatemala will serve as something of a guidepost for their future paths. My 17-year-old just graduated from high school and is headed to college this fall. It’s an exciting time in his life when he also has to make some decisions about his future. I know he’s going to do well and will be successful in whatever direction he decides to go.

Other than Bear Lake, I think we’ll probably stick pretty close to home for the rest of the summer, enjoying the Treasure Valley and getting outside for trail rides, runs, and hiking. Speaking of getting outside, our patient appreciation party is almost here! I hope you already RSVP’d because this event’s attendance is now at maximum capacity. I think it’s going to be a fun time and a way we can say thank you for being a part of Ustick Dental Office. As gratifying as it is to go to another country and meet a dental need there, it also makes me grateful for the patients I get to see every day here at Ustick Dental.

Have a great rest of your summer, and I’ll see you at the zoo!

Watch Their World Expand With Every Step HIKING WITH YOUR KIDS

BRING ALONG SOME TOOLS OF DISCOVERY Getting your children to engage in nature while you’re out hiking can be as simple as bringing a magnifying glass along with you. Let your kids look at leaves, rocks, insects, or anything else you might come across on the trail. You can also bring binoculars to help them look at a bird that might be perched a little too high up. Another option is a bug holder to let your kids catch smaller insects, such as grasshoppers or pill bugs, and give them a close-up look. KEEP SAFETY IN MIND While you’re out on the trail, it’s essential to make sure that both you and your family are safe. Wear breathable, noncotton material and sturdy shoes that don’t expose your toes. It’s important to dress according to the weather. For example, if the day is sunny, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and apply plenty of sunscreen on any exposed skin. Bring your kids’ favorite snacks and water bottles for everyone to stay hydrated. It’s crucial that you also bring a fully stocked first-aid kit in case someone is injured on the hike. Starting with one of your local hiking trails can be a rewarding way to spend the day with your kids. You can watch their excitement as they expand their world with new discoveries.

Hiking has many benefits as a family activity, such as mental health improvement, strengthening your relationships, and experiencing new sights and discoveries together. It’s also great exercise, and you get plenty of quality time, fresh air, and sunshine. Here are three guidelines to help you and your kids have fun on your next hike. ENCOURAGE THEIR CURIOSITY One of the best ways to have your children learn about the world is letting them explore it. Being there for your children and encouraging them to ask questions about flowers, bugs, or animals you see on the trail will help them expand their vocabulary and learn how things work. When they learn they can explore independently and ask about the world around them, they’re gaining the confidence to teach themselves.

THE EFFECTS OF SUGAR ON TEETH And Improving Your Enamel

CAVITIES The constant destruction of the enamel by these acids creates a bacterial infection, which can eat away at your tooth until there is a hole, aka a cavity. Cavities can be treated in many ways depending on their severity. If it has just started, using

Everyone knows that an excessive amount of sugar isn’t healthy, but many are unaware why sugar is bad for teeth. It might surprise you to know that sugar itself isn’t what hurts your teeth; it’s what happens after you consume it.

THE BATTLE OF THE MOUTH Our mouths are filled with bacteria, but don’t be alarmed because most of them are helpful rather than harmful. However, these helpful bacteria are at constant odds with those looking to destroy your enamel. Harmful oral bacteria feed on sugars, and when they do, they produce acid, which strips healthy minerals from your tooth enamel. This process is known as demineralization.

fluoride treatments can increase remineralization and build up enamel again. Another option is to receive a filling, which is a common treatment that fills the hole with various materials, such as porcelain or tooth-colored resins. When the cavity isn’t treated, it burrows deeper into the tooth, causing pain and tooth loss.

IMPROVING REMINERALIZATION Making sure your teeth are exposed to constant minerals is the best method to strengthen your enamel. In addition to using fluoride rinses and toothpastes, keep an eye on your diet. Avoiding sugary foods and consuming fruits and vegetables with high fibers, cheeses and yogurts with calcium and phosphates, and black and green teas to repress harmful bacteria are all ways to improve remineralization. Ingredients • 2 lbs ground chuck beef, 20% lean • 8 slices melting cheese (like American, Swiss, Muenster, or cheddar) • 16 small potato rolls, toasted • Salt and pepper, to taste • Your favorite burger accompaniments JUICY LUCY Inspired by Bon Appétit Magazine 2. Rip cheese into roughly equal pieces, creating 16 equal portions. 3. Using your index finger, create a small indentation in each ball. 4. Fill indention with cheese and pinch meat around to seal. Then gently form balls into 3/4-inch-thick patties. Season patties. 5. Meanwhile, heat a cast-iron skillet to medium-high. 6. Lightly coat skillet with oil and cook patties in batches. Brown one side undisturbed, about 3 minutes. Carefully flip and cook until desired doneness, about 3 minutes for medium. 7. Serve on toasted potato rolls with your favorite accompaniments. Sliders Directions 1. Divide beef into 16 evenly sized balls.

TAKE A BREAK Patient Appreciation Event Thank you for the great response! Because of that, we are at maximum capacity. There may still be a chance for you to attend with last minute cancellations. Please call the office at 208-286-4582 with any questions. Demineralization is continuously butting heads against another process called remineralization, which replaces destroyed minerals and strengthens the teeth. When someone eats a large quantity of sugars or starches, demineralization can happen more quickly and more often, and remineralization can’t keep up.
