High-quality writing is foundational to pupils' academic success across all subjects. The DfE Writing Framework (2024) sets out clear expectations for how schools should teach, sequence, and assess writing — moving away from sole reliance on teacher assessment towards a more substantive, evidence- informed approach. Ensuring Abbey’s taught curriculum explicitly reflects the framework's key principles safeguards consistency, raises attainment, and positions the school well for inspection scrutiny under a reformed Ofsted framework that increasingly values curriculum coherence and intent.

Writing framework curriculum review.

Conduct a structured audit of the school's current taught writing curriculum (including sequence, vocabulary, grammar, and composition) against the key learning expectations outlined in the DfE Writing Framework. Identify gaps, strengths, and areas requiring adaptation at each year group from EYFS – Y6.

Resources are available via the DfE framework documentation and existing curriculum plans. The English leader has capacity to lead this work within their protected leadership time. Any curriculum amendments will be phased into planning to avoid mid-year disruption.
