Awareness of Coachability
Suggested Strategy: Using a Permission-Based Question is a great way
to open the conversation, while having the individual allow themselves to
be subjected to feedback.
Suggested Questions:
→ Permission-Based Question + The Sword: “With your permission, I
would like to share some perceptions that I have related to your
coachability. I believe that we can open some opportunities for
development for you. I do not want to make any assumptions about
where you are coming from, which is why I would like your permission to
share my perceptions with you.” When permission is granted, you can
then share your concerns about their coachability in the form of
perceptions to avoid sounding directive.
→ Risk Question: What risks do you think we might mitigate by sharing
an understanding coaching relationship?
Suggested Activities:
→ GOAL-Based Coaching: What does the individual strive to become
Great at in their career? What Opportunities might be presented to the
individual as a result of becoming great? What specific Actions must the
individual take to bring those opportunities within reach? What will the
individual Love about reaching their goals? How might coaching help
them reach these goals?
